sequence playback only playing one sound at a time

i have a different event on each of 2 tracks (1 event per track) recorded in the same position in the bar (one on top of the other), and when I play it back it only plays one at at time. i know it's recorded cause in the step editor i can see it. and when i play it, i can hear all the layers, but they won't play together if they happen at exactly the same point in the bar. i don't know if i'm explaining this well, but it's very frustrating.

i just picked the 2500 up (i had a 2000 before), so i dont' know if there's a default or something.

If both sounds are coming from the same Program, check that the program is in POLY playback mode, not MONO (Mode Program / Params).

yeah, it's in poly. but still no go. i was paging through the manual and it had all this info on the velocity numbers and how if they're above 100 they won't play back. i have no idea if this is related. probably not, but i can't figure out what's causing this. i recorded, pressed stop, and tried to play back. that's it.
