Composition

Hi guys,

In my pre-MPC period I worked with Logic. One of the advantages of Logic/cubase etc. is that you can build up your arrangements lineairly and see what's happening. My problem is that I love my MPC 2500 but my creations are always 8 or max. 16 bars. In conjunction with the track mute this can be interesting in Live situations perhaps but I want to be compose a bit like in Logic. What I mean is that I want to record the first 8 bars(A), than move on to the next 8 bars (B), bar 9 to 16 and focus on these bars untill I am happy and continue to the next 4 or 8 bars(C) etc.

My question is, is there a possibility to focus in a way that if I work on the second bar (B) I can let the sequencer loop and start from bar 9 untill 16 and loop between these two, do my overdubs, repeats etc.?

Am I clear?

Actually, I do use the next sequence feature a lot but in a totally different way. I considered my sequences as compositions by themselfs so every sequence is a song if you understand what I mean. BUT you're suggestion is very nice one Stilo Why not starting a new sequence foor the new part of my song. Is this the way that people use there MPC's and actually the best way?

You can always start with 8 bars, then change the length of the sequence to 16 bars. Once you change the length of the sequence to 16 bars you'll have a 8 bars of dead space after your first 8 bars to work in, so now highlight loop and press window then change your loop to bars 9-16.

This is assuming you want all the bars in 1 sequence. You could even later split the sequence up if you want to have 2 eight bar sequences.

Are you like saying that you'd like have a sequence that, lets say is 32bars long, but then be able to set a punch-in and punch-out points anywhere within in that sequence and then be able to loop that part to do your overdubs....IE: a continuous loop from bar 9 to 16 ONLY...

I don't think this can be done but there is a type of work around...

(this is based on your 1st post)..1stly Setup your sequences....(A) with 8bars...(b) with 8bars...(C) with 4 bars.....

Now go to song mode and arrange your 3 sequences to play in that order...A,B then C.

Now back at MAIN page you can work on each sequence independantly looped but at a push of couple of buttons hear them combined (in song mode)...

Also in song mode you can setup upto 20 songs, so if you want to hear only part B to C it can be done....even change the order....or repeats...etc

Even convert the songs to hear them looped on your main page as new sequence if you like....(you have 99 sequnces to play with)

Well sort of. To split a sequence you would have to do the following work around:

Lets say you want to split a 8 bar sequence into two 4 bar sequences.First copy the 8 bar sequence so that you have two of them. Next go to <sequence edit> <F2>(Bars) select Edit:DELETE and delete bars 1-4 of one of the sequences. Then delete bars 5-8 in the other sequence.....the result is two 4 bar sequences. really easy to do. Although I do recommend making 2 copys of the sequence just incase you mess up.

Yes it can be done. Highlight the LOOP field and open Window, there you can set from where to where you want the sequence to loop. If you wanna work that way.

And THIS is not a workaround, it's basically how it should be done.

WOW!!!!! Stilo...Thanks heaps mate.....because when I'm midi sequencing with the keyboard I could definately sometimes work that way.....It'll give a little more flow through a converted song.

Man I gotta remember to watch for da window.
