actually, i've had an s950 for the last 5 years and before i picked up the 2500 in september 06, i had the off-white 2000xl for 6 years. sold the 2000xl less than a year ago since i wasn't using it.
i've also had second-hand event 20/20bas monitor speakers for a number of years now, and when i bought them, i sure as heck found out how many hours of use they had on them before hand.
but in case you were unaware, the electrical components inside of your equipment do have a lifetime, they won't last forever. the longer you keep the equipment on, the quicker that lifetime depreciates. in other words, your equipment should last longer if you keep it off while you're not using it.
that's why the backlight on my s950 still works, because i keep it off when i'm not using it. if i had it on for the last 5 years, that sucker would've burned out a long time ago.
and by the way, PC servers do run 24/7, but that's because there's a business need for them to run 24/7. in most cases they do get rebooted on a regular schedule since if left on for too long their performance sometimes starts to lag due to programs not properly de-allocating memory and issues such as that. at my work, we make sure to have a couple hours of down time at night when jobs aren't running so that server upgrades can be performed and reboots can be taken care of.
