synth and mpc

I got an alesis micron. I've never used any synth with my MPC before, and I just wanted to know how to hook it up together. I tried hooking it up through audio in, but got no sound at all. Then I connected it with a midi cable but I couldn't get sound either. I could only control my MPC programs on my synth. I can't think of anything else to do. thanks
