I have had the same problem before as well.

check this thread:

Or just search for NEW FOLDER BUG and you will see that this issue has many different causes which can normally be fixed by an OS upgrade a a reformat of your HD.

When does it crash? when you make a new folder to save to or during the saving of your project?

It has been noted before that the MPC would sometimes freeze when creating a folder to save to. If that is the case, plug you MPC into a PC via the usb cable and create a bunch of new folders that you will be able to rename when you have a project. This is only a work around for the issue but at least yu will be able to keep banging those beats out.

What are you saving to? HD or Compact flash? Have you tried reformatting either?

when i'm done with a beat and i always save the entire memory. creating folders hasen't been a problem. it's when i hit DO IT and the popup window comes up where it just freezes.

sometimes when i just explore the folders, it just freaks out and looses everything. then i can only see the root but no files/folders. i have a 80 gb hard drive that i save to. saving to the flash memory hasen't been a problem.

i also updated the akai os, no difference. i'm in bad need of some help specificly for this problem.

OK, well we've almost exhausted the possibilities of the similar issue i have experienced. Can you hook you MPC up to a PC?
If you can i would suggest making a backup of your MPC HD and then performing a reformat on your HD, since this is where the problem is.
It could be a corrupt folder causing your MPC to freak out when you just try to explore it, hence the reason for the display on your MPC to only show you the root occasionally.

Have you just tried making a simple beat (i.e. drum loop) and saving that to see if it still happens? Erase all the programs you don't need and purge the memory, then make the drum loop and try to save the project as you normally would. This way you can fnd out if maybe one of your program folders is corrupt.

Sorry I can't say for sure what it is, but maybe a reformat is the only option left.

yeah, i already did a backup to my pc since i updated the akai os. when i copied the files some were corrupt. strange stuff...

i've made some new beats. some get saved, some get froze up in the saving. i can't really see a clear pattern. some projects even got saved the first time, and then when i save a new version of it the machine freezes.

is there any possibilities that this is a hardware failure or is this probably just something on the hd messing with me?

Seeing as you can save to the compact flash without any problems I would guess that the HD is acting up.

I would suggest trying another HD in your MPC and save to your Compact Flash for now. Is your MPC under warranty? I don't normally think of sending my MPC back when something goes wrong but if you find that another HD does the same thing then it may be the only option.

do you save to the same folder if you save a beat again? if so this might be the problem - the best way to avoid this is always save to a new folder and never overwrite old files.

that sounds twisted, i need to keep my projects in order. overwriting shouldn't be a problem, should it?

all these troubles... is this normal for an mpc? i just wanna get it right so i can keep working. feels like this ain't the last problem i'm gonna run in to...
