Carl Craig used the MPC3000 a lot in the late 90s. Todd Terry also used an MPC 2k some years ago.
Richie Hawtin's / Plastikman's classic tracks were done in hardware, and he used a Kawai Q80 live well until the late 90s.
I'm sure the list of people who moved from hardware to maschines and/or ableton live could go on (and whose music is no longer interesting... ).
LCD Soundsystem use (or used) MPC1k's live.

Modern computers are not suitable tools for midi-sequencing external gear, mainly because current interfaces are not good at handling many channels of midi. In comparison Ataris are much tighter (proper built-in midi ports).
