Thinking About "Switching"

I think I've made up my mind, I'm not going to do it.

The 4K is a beast. I love her too much, even if I don't use a few of her perks and nannies.

With the 2500, I'd have to purchase the ram upgrade, a new HD, a CD burner and a dj mixer since it doesn't have a phono input.

with the X6, I'd have to purchase two 256mb ram chip, a compact flash adapter and card & the audio track expansion upgrade.

Blah!!!!

I'm just gonna get the Proteus 2000 and call it a day for now.

I just saw a brand new 2500 on ebay "buy it now" for $1,500 and NOBODY bid on it. WHY? Hell how much can u get a non-upgraded used 2500 for?

doesn't that tell you how much the 2500 is gonna depreciate in value?

Keep the 4K man. If I had one, I would never sell it. Even if it's just for the sentimental value.

The turning point for me was reading a 2500 vs. 4000 thread, some guy said the 4000 definintely had a stronger sound and obviously that's cuz of the the sample rate and whatnot. I can't afford to get a weaker sound than the 4K's. I already went from the ASR to the 4K, that was painful enough.

I'm just gonna focus on building a sound module arsenal right now starting with the Proteus 2000.

Actually, I haven't killed the idea.

I'm going to go to Sam Ash or Guitar Center and play with both before I completely dead the idea.

The 'sound' of the MPC wouldn't matter much if I'm running all my samples & drums thru the Fantom anyway.

I've always wanted a Fantom so it's kinda hard to just let this go.

lol dude, at least you can afford to rethink. But if I was you, I would keep the 4K, then save up to get the Fantom (if that's what you really want).

But then again it's your money...I'll leave it at that.

I'll have about 5 or 6 hundred to spare in about a week PLUS another 3 or 4 hundred since I'm selling a few pieces of gear.

I appreciate you're train of thought my friend. The only thing that hurts is actually saving all this to purchase something for so much. I didn't have this in my plans right now but oh well.

Now I'm actually thinking about getting the Fantom-S instead of the X.

The only major differences is

No color screen (I think it's the same color as the 4k's screen also)
upgradeable ram is 288 (as opposed to the 512 in the X)
uses Smart Media cards up to 128 megs in size (as opposed to the X using compact flash as large as 1 gig in size)

That's pretty much it. I'd really only be saving my self a few hundred but it is something to think about and I am on a tight budget.

Settled on the Proteus 2000.

Why?

Well the Fantom X6 goes for about $1150-$1300 with no expansions added (well accept the audio track expansion). I figure, if I wait another 3 months or until the beginning of next year, I could get that for about $1000.

Plus, I'd rather get a car right now

The 4K is a beast, one I haven't fully learned so I'd rather not sell it. Plus it has the best interface of any MPC, hard to let that go.

Because people are smart shoppers, you can get a 2500 for $1699 new.
At first Akai was throwing in the 128 free, then they changed it to throwing in the CD-M25 free.
Makes paying $1500 for a used base unit a bad deal.
