Black vs. Blue Pad Reliability

I'm new 'round here so firstly hello folks.

I've done a search of the archives and read (most of) the stickies but I only caught one hint from Antonym (sp?) that Akai had perhaps changed the pad design slightly for the black mpc1000 compared with the blue machines.

My question is: did anyone manage to confirm this? (by opening one up or getting the info from other sources).

I'm trying to figure out if I should pick up a second hand blue mpc1000 or go and try and get discount on a new black one. Longevity of the pads might tip it toward the black.

Antonym mentioned that the relacement pads (which are found on the black 1000) only have a bit more glue on the 4 corners of the sensor. That's the only difference... so eventually the new glue will come apart as well.

also, just read from a black mpc user (the mpc, not necessarily the user) that the conductive material is not separated to the sensor by glue dots at all, but rather adhered overtop of it. this will make it last longer.

Good question. I never heard anyone mention a distinction so I assumed there wasn't one.

So I guess the answer is... kinda.

i say buy a red/blue from someone who is selling it for cheap due to "busted pads," then buy the upgrade when it's available since you may have to do it down the line anyway. you'd end up saving lots of money.

buying a busted 1k (as long as it's busted like bad data wheel, buttons, pads, not like fried) means MAJOR savings if you know how to solder. even if you do spend a hundred on the pad upgrade, you'd still save money.

but if you just want to buy something new and get to work immediately, get the black for sure.

I've just picked up a mint condition blue machine (arrived yesterday). I'll deal with the pad issue if it occurs.

you should be. that's a deal and a half considerin new units retail at £700.

I'm curious where u got it though? e-bay seems to be my only option right now. I'd import from the US but customs hit you hard apparently 30%... bastards

black 1k for sure, although i like the blue red colour a lil better
