SP-555 VS MV-8000

The SP-555, as well as the MPD24, with a computer sounds like an interesting combination. The MV-8000 pretty much has the same features as a computer but with the built-in hardware feel. How do these three products compare?

this thread is retarded. one is a full blown sampler/sequencer while the other one is just a grove/phrase sampler. Sure the SP's got a sequencer but it's tedious.

My bad, I just don't want to regret buying an sp-555. I tried it out at my local music store and it felt so right. I didn't have a single problem with it besides the lack of an LCD. I think it was the simplicity that really caught my attention. I guess, in the end, I just have to ask myself what I need and what offers it.

The SP-555 is a live unit for DJs and stage use. It's very powerful when used in in the proper context. The large LED is used becuase in live environments one needs fast visual cue (tiny text is out of place here).

The 8000/8800 is far more complex and geared for studio/production use.

If you're looking for a live sampler there's nothing that touches it. With 2GB streaming directly from the CF card storage isn't a problem. The software make pre-gig setup a snap.

If your doing production you may want to look at the 8000 , MPC or maybe a hybrid like th SP-606.

Watch out there are a lot of peeps saying that the live looping isn't too hot.

Whether this is user error you need to decide...check roland forums.

From experience Roland gear is great, but it's budget end always promises stuff that is far from the users experience.


Roland gear has great quality effects, but that step sampler on the groove series is a not much fun. Only by the 555 for live stuff IMHO.

Still be better off with a lappy and Ableton and some foot pedals if you don't mind using software.

Velocity pads are a boon on the 555, I'd read some of the problems peeps have with it on the roland clan forums first. The add like most is mostly ball and dressing.

The loop capture function is alright. It won't give you any problems as long as you set the tempo before you begin sampling.

I think I'm going to trade in my SP-555 for an MPD24 and an SP-303.

You'll get a better return on ebay unless you're due a full refund.

Also I'd look into a used MV-8000 for way less than $900 these days.
