I recently purchased the MPC 2000 (not the XL version) and it is being shipped to me as we speak.

Would it be an upgrade to get the MPC 500 or a downgrade? I realize the fact of portability and all that comes into play but in the basics of the machine does the 2000 have anything the 500 doesn't? I know that the 500 comes with a 128 MB compact flash card. The MPC that I bought is a 2000 and it has no upgrades.

Any insight appreciated.

Unless you require portability, there is no reason to get the 500 over any other MPC.

The 2000 is a classic, do not doubt it.

Once you receive it, knuckle down, learn it and aim to master it.

Don't think,.....just do.

Thanks man. Definitely making me feel better about getting the 2000. The only thing I guess that concerns me is the fact of the memory issue and plug in options for midi, etc. and the fact that I would get the MPC 500 for about $100 cheaper. In regards to the memory and being that I am completely new to the MPC world I am unsure how the memory comes into play but I assume it is in reference to sample times and how many you can have loaded, etc. Is that going to be a problem at all with the 2000? I have a friend who is sending me a 32 meg upgrade for the 2000 but the 500 comes with 128 which seems like quite a lot more. I guess the benefit of stocking the MPC with batteries and making some stuff under a tree in a park on a sunny day is enticing as well but surely not needed. As I said, I am only curious I guess about the memory and ins/outs options, etc.
