this year i want to take piano (read:keyboard ) lessons...everytime i want to play some chords or chords progressions i have to go thru a very slow trial and error process...its gettin annoyn, plus this year i bought a veryy nice dx7 and i want to know how to play it

There's a 3000 for sale on ebay right now from Millers Music in Chamblee, GA, 770-455-3596. I called and its open for bid. They said they usually sell for $1300-$1500 in the store. So make a bid if you want one. It has to be US, they won't ship to UK. I just bought a new 2.4GHz, 20 inch Intel iMac last weekend, so I don't want to drop another $1500 on music right now. I'm happy with my 2500 for now. I need 8 outs and USB. ALthough I know I can't capture the true 3000 converters, there are enough plug ins and dither tools to crunch down and get phat thick kiks and hot snares. But that 3000 is tempting to just midi into my 2500. I also have an original Ensoniq EPS 12-bit that is midi'd to my 2500. Not close to a 3000 but again I can play with plug ins and EQs to get cruch and thickness. Go for it though. I hope you get it.

The Ensoniq EPS/EPS-m is NOT 12bit, its actually 13bit. IT being a 12bit machine is a myth that is as old as the actual machine itself. I have the EPS-M and its real nice. never got into the 1000/2500's / only feature i like on it is the direct record.

I would recommend getting an MPC1000 plus an older rack/keyboard sampler like an Emu Emax 1 (either rack or keyboard) or an Akai S900/950 (rack only).

The MPC1000 is small and portable, the other will give you that old school flavor. In particular, an Emax 1 Keyboard maybe a good choice, since you could use that as a controller in addition to getting the SP1200ish sound (they share alot of the same sound and the same analog filters).

Am I right in saying that an MPC3000 has the same converters as an Akai s3000 sampler that goes for less than 150 bucks on ebay?

I carry my mpc 2500 all over the place and it works fine.

I have an mpc2000xl and an s950. recently i have sampled all the drums from one kit/song into the 950 and then back again into the 2000xl.
I did a comparison between the sounds played originally from the mpc, then the sounds triggered via midi on the s950 and then the resampled sounds on the mpc.

Best sounding:
probably s950 but: because you midi trigger it, the timing gets a bit funny, its much looser than samples played in the mpc.
2nd best:
resampled sounds on the mpc. It still sounded way better than the original sounds and also rock solid!
3rd best:
the original sounds on the mpc. too polite and a little boring.

conclusion:
much better sound after resampling through s950, much better attack of the drums etc. I would strongly recommend to resample each sound on it's own, since you get an extra crunch by way of the exciter in the s950, i think if you sample all sounds at once you might loose that attacky sound.
it makes a real difference if you do it to a whole kit.

here is a totally different approach:
get a cheap sp202 box from roland/boss. it has 4 different sampling methods from hifi to super lofi and it gives your samples a serious crunch. then sample back into the s950.

i have just bought an emax 1. the sampling on it is very warm (8bits actually) and rounded. i have not had an sp1200 but listened to a lot of tracks that have been made with it and the emax sounds very close.

the emax system always goes back to the floppy drive for the OS, which can be a bit scary if you have a bad drive. (is that the same with the sp1200, because i am tempted to buy one one day) but the emax yahoo user group is god for finding spares and it's a very cheap machine.

i have not created any patches on the emax as i find the interface a bit clunky (i am new to it mind you) but sampled straight from sped up vynil through it to my xl. laborious but sounds good!

so emax is a good choice if u ask me!
