You only have 8 instrument tracks but can place up to 61 wav samples on each of the 8 instrument tracks which gives you 488 individual sounds. Trust me that would not be a good thing for the ASR's polyphony.
ASR vs MPC are two different worlds . ASR is an old machine with lots of power but if you don't have the ability to make a dope beat without quantizing id stick to the MPC. With the ASR you can really change the sound of the sample through internal effects and envelopes. The MPC gives you the ability to recreate the sample through chops as opposed to the ASR which changes the sounds texture
I just got into the MPC and man i can bang shit out quick. In my opinion though you have to have some source of optional sounds, a synth or something. The MPC is a DRUM MACHINE. A powerful drum machine and after using the ASR for more than 10 years the timing on the MPC is so much tighter. I'm digin the MPC now.
