Ok ive money to burn on an mpc,... but ama bit LosT

right since the 4k has discontinued,
am gonna look for One instead of getting the 5k, even tho the 5k looks niceee = buggy still, so am i thinkin right? am new to forum also, i dont really know about the roland mv-8800 so... think ama stick to akai for now! ive bin readin ppls thoughts on the 4k n 5k. and like 98% have said get a 4k over the 5k so any help would be great!

There are several posts on this, do a search - I'd suggest an mpc 2500 with JJOS 2XL.

but then Im biased

p.s. note that you can still get a 4k if you look around hard enough.

Im based in the UK as well - there are quite a few users/mpc sellers over here so keep looking.

no worries - mpc 2500 is seen as the 'mid range' model between the 1000 and the 5000.

The thing here is JJOS (Japanese Jenius (!) Operating System). Basically someone created an alternative OS to use.

Now while the hardware is the same - the JJOS is excellent - look at http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~mpc1000/mpc2500/chart.htm for a rundown of how jjos compares with the akai os. It really does make the mpc into a different beast althogether. After looking at the chart - do a few searches on this forum for JJOS and what people think of it.

As I understand it - JJOS is only available for the 1000 and 2500 models. So at the moment, you're not going to get a 5000 with JJOS (and Im not sure you ever will).

So its not just the hardware you need to consider - but the OS and how well it works for you.

So mpc 2500 is the mid-range AKAI but JJOS really does put the unit in a different league.

General opinion seems to be that the 4k is one of the most stable mpcs out there, whereas I've seen loads of posts critisizing the 4k.

This look like a potentially great deal on a 2500, if you decide to go that route.

That's a difficult question to answer, depends more on what you need rather than the machine itself. I'm not too familiar about the OS development of the 5000 and how buggy it may or may not be, but the 4k's OS is pretty solid.

Also, the 5000 may be buggy NOW, but we don't know what the future holds for it. All it needs is some great OS updates and that could be one of the best MPC's, period! That depends on Akai.

The 2500 is the MPC5000 minus the over-hyped onboard synth.

Personally, I'd look around for a used 2500 and whack on the JJOS ... I have seen these as low as £500 in the UK.

However, if you really want to go hardware/software hybrid, just focus on NI's Maschine - really is gonna be hard to beat. Still, the MPCs will still have their place, but they will get further and further into those rarely discovered dark corners of your studio at some point. I keep mine at the front, though, cause I just get a warm feeling when I look at those soft black rubber pads ( fetish maybe ?!! ).


Good luck .... but dfon't blow your money a a seriously over-priced MPC5000 ( that is like throwing over £800 out of the window just for the fun of seeing how the notes fall to the ground, honestly !! ).

u do realize those numbers dont mean anything....the 3k came out waay before the 1k , and the 1k is better than the 3k, feature wise. So the statement " not into anything below the 3k" is basically void here.

I'd get the 5000 or the 2500 w JJOS tbh.

The 5000 is the best MPC out of the current batch imo.

At fist I was put off from buying the 5000 due to critics reports of buggy software, but I can safely say this is the best MPC since the 3000 imo.

Too bad the 5000 has that lame VA synth built in.
