Hey guys,

Just for fun I decided to do a comparison between the sonic differences between my MPC Studio and my MPC 60 MKII. I tried to keep the levels as close as possible between the two. I sampled each individual sound from the MPC software and into the 60 and sequenced the same pattern into both with 65% swing. I recorded the individual outputs into Reaper and switched it every four bars. It goes Studio, 60, Studio, 60. Aside from a 24dB low pass filter on one of the kicks no effects or dynamics have been used.

It would be interesting to hear peoples thoughts.

HOLD IT!!!!

I thought I was sampling direct from my audio interface into the MPC but I forgot it was running though my Drawmer tube preamp/compressor (no compression was used) so keep in mind that I can't guarantee how much of the "sound" is MPC 60 and how much is Drawmer.

Sorry guys

I'll do it again over the weekend using the same samples without the Drawmer in the signal chain. It could even be better this way to have a comparison of the Studio, 60 direct and 60 with a decent preamp. If I get time I'll also sample with my UA Twin Finity 710 to get a transistor preamp in the mix.

Terratec Mic8. Not super class conversion but I would say it's representative of what most bedroom producers are using.

Why? Cats are too reliant on their eyes for audio these days and I disagree. Can't chop without seeing a waveform, can't compress without visual feedback. That's why I love samplers like the 60 and my EPS. You have to chop with your ears, not your eyes.

Why?

Well, whats the title of your thread?

Most people who use this subforum use MPC60's or MPC3000's. Most people also have a habit of using their eyes. You can **** with your eyes closed if you want to, but opening your eyes adds another dimension to the experience. Either way, you still get the job done.

About the spectrum analysis, it was more of a suggestion for your "comparison", to compare the MPC Software MPC60 Vintage Mode with the original machine. At some point someone will do a more thorough scientific "comparison"; sadly I don't have the tools. Sorry some of us are nerds like that. Wish you all the best, I'll pull up a seat at the back...

Fair enough. Not trying to rock your boat bro. Just letting you know why I personally didn't offer any kind of spectrum analysis.

This was just supposed to be a brief sound comparison between the two. Not trying to be too scientific. I was just interested to see how the strong the "sound" of the 60 actually was.

Just to be clear, this isn't an MPC 60 Vintage mode vs MPC 60 comparison. Vintage mode isn't available out of the box to MPC Studio users. This is just purely MPC Studio vs MPC 60. I have done the VST trick to get vintage mode but I really don't think it does a lot. If I get bored over the weekend I might throw that into the mix.

I'll try and keep the next one on a more level playing field. Probably sample from Vinyl so the sound of the converters going into Reaper is the same for both.

I guess it's more for people lurking around who are unsure if hardware samplers actually sound any better than software sampling. Before I picked up some hardware samplers I did a lot of forum lurking and a lot of what I read what that the difference isn't that great. Owning some samplers now, I disagree entirely.

Well unfortunately they can.
If you use the right software with the proper hardware you can easily achieve the same sound.
If your statement was accurate it would mean that you can't record to a DAW without losing the sound you had, which again is not the case.

Hardware and software have one major thing in common they are only as effective as the operator, which is critical to the end results.

Dedicated hardware is a choice not a requirement.

I don't disagree, that was probably a poor choice of words from me. I probably should have said "I guess it's more for people lurking around who are unsure if hardware samplers actually sound any different to software sampling"

I haven't for one moment intended to imply that hardware samplers are necessarily superior to software. I've just come across a few opinions on forums that say there's not much of a difference. I just wanted to show that the difference I've experienced in my setup between totally ITB and using my 60 with an outboard preamp.

I think the difference is night and day.

there is no way you can compare a mpc studio to a mpc 60...as it is the digital converters and pre amps that affect the sound. The mpc studio is just a midi controller bundled with the mpc software. You would be comparing that sounnd card audio interface a/d d/a converters you use with the computer..

The mpc ren could be compared, as that has the audio inteface built in...

Not entirely true as I've used stock MPC sounds so my audio interface has zero to so with the sound of the Studio in this comparison.

Opinions on how this comparison was conducted could fly back and forth for ever.

At the end of the day, this is a comparison of what this beat would sound like if I were to keep it in the box or decide to run it through the MPC 60. Yes, other effects and dynamics could be used to attempt to achieve a similar sound. But this does show how the MPC and my preamp affects the sound of my beats.

Can a mod lock this down before it gets out of control? I think this thread has served its purpose and debating how I've conducted the test is, in my opinion, off topic.
