I own an MPC60II. I like the interface, sequencer, pads, 16 levels and OS. Adds up to funky patterns pumping out the speakers.
I just wish it had a higher ppqn and quantisation strength.
I also have a Motif XF7. It has 480 ppqn and quantisation strength.
I usually play drums in and quantise to 50% on the Motif.

If the MPC 4000 had quantise strength I would be tempted to try it out.

Are there any big issues with the 4000? Were there any OS upgrades for the 4000 made by anyone?
Peace.

The golden era is 87-92 for me.

I got a reply from an MPC 4000 user on the gearslutz forum. He says the 4000 has quantise strength from 50-75% only.
Sounds like an odd implementation of quantise strength.
I downloaded the MPC 4000 manual and can't find any reference to this feature.
Is it true that the MPC 4000 has quantise strength?

What the hell is quantize strenght??? :? :| :-D

Do you mean swing settings? If yes, the 4000 has swing, yes, the 60II has it as well by the way...

PS: 50% swing is actually NO swing at all (on MPCs).

It's an additional parameter that acts as a threshold of sorts, so you can set it up to partially quantize your playing. It's a very useful feature to have, but it's exclusive to JJOS, the 5K and the Ren/Studio.

The 4Ks realtime quantize is still the best though.

Ohhhhh, excuse my ignorance in this case...

Is it similar to the timing correct feature in the MPC2500 Akai OS? There's the following parameters:

- Note value: 1/8, etc.
- Swing: 57%, etc.
- Shift timing: EARLIER, etc.
- Ammount: 4, etc.

Would this be the last two parameters that are similar to quantize strenght?

It's a clunky feature to have, it never feels like it's turned completely off.
Doesn't feel quite right on Roland or Akai.
Should have a parameter to toggle it on or off as well as the adjustable percentage.

From limited experience I know it's a feature that won't rescue a dodgy performance, but even in a 'top of the line' DAW like Cubase 8 it can be clunky.

There will always be an element of clunkiness while it's an offline process though. You're essentially pissing in the wind all the time, which is why I keep hoping that realtime quantize or at least realtime quantize 'audition' like the 4K makes it into the Ren. It takes the guesswork out of the process and can also be used and abused as a creative feature. 8)

Feels more like something that gets in the way of a good performance.
When people were asking JJ for it and then talking about how good it was, I was surprised that they thought it was a useful tool.

It's a wet/dry for quantize... there's not much more that can be said about it really. It benefits certain genres more than others.

It always seemed that units that have Strength still have a certain little off factor about them even when it's supposedly turned down.
Like it never turns fully off at a setting of "0".
On the 5k and Ren you might not noticed since it's standard but back when JJ added it I found that I had to start working with double tempo for things to feel right.
If I reverted back to the previous OS it was ok at normal tempo.

How do you guys get on with JJOS anyway? I've tried it once and never again after i've read about the serious midi-timing issues.

In a real-world scenario you'd never use it with a setting of zero, but I know where you're coming from.

It illustrates my point even further that some kind of evolution of the 4K's realtime quantize (minus the bugs) is the best way forward for future MPCs. 1 or 2% either way can make or break what you're trying to do with it, so being able to hear it in realtime is vital IMO.
