B-stock mpc2500...

i just bought a B-stock mpc 2500 and should be here by fri.
is it true you need the cr drive to be able to use the optional hard drive?
this is my first mpc...does it have an internal memory or just cf all the way? anyone enjoying this machine?
i was thinking about the 1000 but they are going to be discontinued.
