They should have release a true MPC

They should have released an updated MPC2.5, added the screen of the mpc 5k along with its workflow improvement, skip the HDR and the VA synth and focused on the sound and feel,..

Higher quality converters and output stages, added 24/96k support (with full 64voice architecture) add two adat's with 24/96k support (or fire wire, usb2) and a computer editor that allows editing of sequences and supports vst though the adat/firewire/usb2.. put the money into a high quality FX engine (working with 3rd party to get it right; lexicon, T.c electronics, Waves (a comp on a pro level, if you can't do it), add a separate dynamic engine , and set up a channel strip per pad (EQ with master mix fx processor (4 buses to low, med, large reverb's send + a master delay independent from the main FX engine (and yes again pro quality/fully editable..
create dedicated hardware short cuts for these on the UI along with other key element functions/buttons for things like; re-sample, track mute/solo, swing (hell there should be a whole section dedicated to swing on the top panel! I mean Kontack was able to bring out more MPC essentials on their control surface in their first try!! .. Roland figured out pad hold first time around the 10 year old asr-x had the brilliantly clever scratch pad/re-sampling system … why cant you do it right!!

The sampling side of the 5k would have been fine with its cycling mode (which is a concept / feature taken from the 4000, yes the 4k can do this if you program it to do so!) and use some of the smarter screen layouts of the sampler from the 4k (things like seeing visual reputation of filter and amp envelop on the same page is a no brainier!!).. why!?

but in most cases and especially for a normal mpc user the sampling engine along with cycle mode is quite satisfactory (cycle mode being somewhat of a limited replacement for a mod matrix.. later add the full blow sampler of the 4k and rightfully call it the mpc5000..

A MPC is a MPC its is a midi/music production center and does it superbly (many have copied but failed you might say there’s none on par with the MPC,.. but it does not hold its own next to real synth’s and real Hdr’s/DAW basically >Va’s & HDR in an mpc ..I mean what is next> Presets!!! That’s just moving too far from the MPC novelty, which has always been about making your own, be it sampling from vinyl or just banging two dildos together to make a sound .. Who cares how you make it, the point is its original, its you!

If you think the MPC should be more of a wav loader with a bunch of features to do everything for you, then Kontack maschine has you beat in every way,

Marketing wise

Being able to use the word “3000” in your brand name rather than running after the word “new flagship” was just plain wrong/bad marketing, the word 3000 is 1000000000x stronger than the word> flagship and it’s a one of the greatest marketing legacies you bought from the old Akai after the word MPC,//!honestly fire whomever is responsible for this terrible oversight.. on top of this, times are changing, the world is changing, there’s an awakening in every aspect of our human perceptiveness, we can see through the media and the marketing bubbles, we are smarter now and are in the process of knowing the truth,..so at least show us the respect of being honest with the legendary MPC! its not just another product.., produce an instrument based on the legend of the MPC rather than producing something you think will move units..

Smarter design, Solid OS, High quality sound, and a great simple feel/worflow,, call it the MPC3500 ..> and you would haved stayed in game respectfully!

Good post. Akai is trying to expand out of their gate instead of focusing on quality. The MPC is a sampler/ drum machine/ midi sequencer thats easy and fun to use for creating music. Focus on those things and perfect them using the best technology you can afford to put in. Collect the best features from other samplers and past MPC's that fit and put them in the box. OS 2 is a big step in the right direction but still not quite there. I hope you guys make a 5kxl with higher quality hardware and sound with emphasis on sample manipulation and sequencing. You can drop the so-so synth and HD altogether. Focus on what an MPC is and make it the very best in those areas.

I don't mind the HD or synth or even presets. Those things are nice additions but thats not what people want an MPC for. JJ chopping blows away the chop features on the 5k and thats what most people do with an MPC. Just plain silly that that was not perfected when you already had a perfect example how to do it. Start tacking synthesizers on after you have perfected the core first. Priorities seem to be off.

AMEN!!!! to these posts. I find it rediculous that a so called "flagship" mpc does not have a full fledge sampler. The 4000 is the flagship mpc in my opinion. Nu-akai's motto seems to be quantity over quality these days. Dont even get me started on us mpc1k owners who have to shell out $180 for the new pads. My mpc would have been on ebay if it were not for JJOS. Akai needs to get back to basics and start making tanks like they did in the 1980's and 90's. Its ok to grow and expand (feature wise), but dont stray away from your bread and butter.

good rant. but im thinking the cost would be too high with a separate dynamic engine and pro quailty FX

My motif XS has really good sounding FX especially the VCM modeling. You get a good reverb and chorus line + 8 stereo dual FX (2 Stereo FX chains for 8 parts) You also get 2 band eq per layer + 3band eq for each of the 16 parts. The filters are great plus you get a really nice rompler and fast load times with 1gig of RAM and its built like a tank. You can pick it up for less than the cost of a 5k. Since the XS was released over two years ago the price of converters and processor chips used for these types of machines has dropped substantially. Of course shipping and raw materials has gone up though.

Askia .. I'd love to try it.. but I'm not in anyway interested as I own and run a 4000 which is far superior for a user like me ,.. besides until the 5k gets a 24/96k support (which I think you should push for os3.0, might have to compromise the poly to 32) there's no comparison .. I love vinyl @ 2496 .. could never go back! nice thoughts on the trim mode btw..

and yes.. its a point, big brand 3rd party licensing might have cost too much ... I dont know, dsp doesn't cost too much these days and instead of a goffy VA and a Hdr, I think they should have focused their dsp power on a digital mixer inside, .. but the main point is, like its been mentioned in this thread, is getting back to basics .. built quality, quality sound, mpc core features, improved UI.. not just a striped down fusion with pads ..sorry Askia had to say it ;).

mpc-1000 is nearly 5 years old now!

Yeah. My 2K could probably do with an update too. I'd like it to be updated to include 16 audio outs, 64-note polyphony, an internal hard-drive and 512Mb's of RAM.

It's OK, I can wait...

good call! ...and why haven't they included sene memories and midi fx ..very much needed on an instruments like this .. and again the fx quality is still a joke in '09 ...at least make them on par with the rolands and yammys..

All the Stores have no mpc-1000 in Stock and in 2 weeks is the "musikmesse"...

And why do they have a site for a mpc-3500?

http://www.akai-pro.de/produkte/mpc3500.html

That's funny...

Akai should have named the MPC 2500...the MPC 3500. The MPC 3000 can't touch the power of the 2500.

You are joking, right!
