This may not be the correct form for this...

OK. Here is my "dilemma". I have come into a bunch of great gear and would like to sell a piece to see if I can't make a little cash. Out of the following, which one would you part with?
1. MV-8000 - maxed with video card
2. 2000xl - maxed with effects card, MCD and 8-outs
3. ASR-10 - no scsi
The only piece of kit I have no experience with is the ASR so I am thinking about selling that due to learning curve (if any) and I have a midi controller...

Gear lust is currently: satisfied!

though choice, that asr would have been a keeper if it had scsi and since you got no experience with it I'd prolly get rid of it. but no matter what you sell outta that setup, they all go for about the same price.

This is the biggest drawback to your dilemma.

-Your MV has the VGA and if you sell it and want it back later you will have to step up to the 8800 meaning more cost.
There are definite advantages to using the MV VGA modes for editing and creation.

-ASR10, still a desirable keyboard with a nice sound and very useable effects.
Yours is missing SCSI but still that's not enough to kill it's usefullness.
If you decide to come back to the ASR later you run the risk of buying someone's problem.

-2kxl the easiest piece to replace. Being maxed doesn't really get you more money since people are only willing to pay a certain amount for them.
Typically to get your money you have to sell the options and unit seperate meaning (1)2kxl w/MCD, (2) 8-out card, (3) Effects card.
That allows you to offer them at attractive prices without you taken a loss on the overall amount.
XL's are a dime a dozen and easy to find plus fall between the old school MP's and the feature rich MP's.

IMO you should keep all 3 or sell the xl.
All 3 pieces are probably worth more to you if you keep them than what you will get for them.
It really comes down to do you need money or do you want to try and make some money to buy something else.

Why can't I "come into a bunch of great gear"? :?

I've never used an ASR, but i've heard the sound and really like it, so maybe ditch the MV?

I don't believe there's any contest here. The MPC and ASR are the best combination you could possibly have. Lack of SCSI, while not ideal, just means you have less storage, and there are SCSI boards around (albeit rare).

Get rid of the MV if one has to go.

All good arguments. I think the MV will probably be getting the short straw. I like how powerful it is but I cannot foresee myself using any of the mastering or about 70% of the features. That's why I track into the PC. Respect to all who spoke on this thread. It’s nice to hear from some real heads and not just brand loyalists. Now the only piece I wish was still in my lineup is the 2500 with JJ. Don't think I would give it an ounce of consideration. MV out, XL out, ASR in.

@ Sovereign. Nice. I think you're spot on. If I don't get the right price for the piece that gets the axe, I'll keep it around until my kid can read "sample" and "trim".

One thing not to overlook.
If you had a 2500 (or even 1k) with JJ, a 4k or 5k then tossing the MV I could see.
Tossing a MV for a XL could never see.

Even those who think they won't use all the features of the MV should hook a VGA up and see how the workflow changes.

The biggest thing about using the VGA is how it changes how quickly you can access functions regardless of if you use the mouse or the front panel.
It just improves the navigation for both.

Building a MPC style pattern in Song Mode on the MV and being able to copy, cut, paste, drag etc your elements while seeing the complete song is just too smooth to ignore.

Also the MV responds fully to external CC's so you can control a synth patch like a synth and we know how many MPC can do this.
You can create a template on your controller and use it's knobs for realtime tweaking of the patches in the MV.

Since you have a MPD you can use it that way plus use the MPC setting in the MPD for when you want the distinct MPC swing or Note Repeat.

All N All I wouldn't give up my MV for an XL.

Menco wrote:I would also get rid of the mv if I was in his position. Large screens doesn't say anything at all to me. Don't want a mouse because I went with the mpc because I hate computers.

It's not the large screen and mouse.
When you use the VGA mode even with the front panel buttons the workflow is hard to beat.
People always talk that computer nonsense but a MV with the VGA is more like using a MPC with a touch screen not a computer.

I still believe anyone saying keep an XL over a MV that has the VGA card installed has never owned both.
There is no comparison.

If we were talking a 2500 w/ JJ, a 4k or 5k then that would be different.
If we were talking a 60 or 3k then that too would be different.

But comparing the MV to a XL that's just no where close.
