I don't think this is a fair comparison. The 2000xl was built to be a full sized MPC, while the 500 was designed as a sketchpad kind of MPC.
Also having the 4 extra pads is kind of big deal when you chop up samples into 16 parts.

wait, 500 or 5000?
if it is the 5000, I would pick the 2000xl because it works. If it were the 500, i would pick the 2000xl because it has full size pads, 4 extra pads, a screen that wasn't made for a calculator, and has build quality.
I mean sure both the 500 and 5000 have software features the 2000xl doesn't have and also they got more ram.... but one of my favourite features of the 2000xl is reliability. plus, if you are in the middle of a bar fight.... which would you rather be holding?

The 2kxl gives new meaning to the term 'beat machine'.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
A 5k jj 1k, jj 2500, or 4k all beat the 2kxl without a doubt.
For some reason there just seems to be way to many people with 5k agendas' even after all this time.
One the best things about being a MPC user from the days of the original is that I have always seen the same ole sh*t.
People always b*tch about a MPC having issues and problems then when a new model comes along they all of a sudden say the old one worked great and had no problems.
The 60 had problems.
The 3k had problems.
The 2k had problems.
The 2kxl had problems.
The 4k had problems.
The 1k had problems.
The 2500 had problems.
The 5k had problems.
The 500 had problems.
Yet people always try to talk like there's this dramatic difference in reliability.
That's just the internet talking, nothing more.
I own/ have owned them all and never saw a perfect MP, but at the same time never saw a MP that prevented me from doing work.
You buy a MP because it fits your workflow.
One of the buggiest MP's ever is called a classic now and that's the OG 2k.
When it was first released crashing was it's specialty, but now people always talk about how reliable the OG 2k is.
I have (2) 5k's and neither has ever crashed or gave me any trouble.

and you are the only person with that experience. go to the 5k section. What is the thing every 5k owner wants? possibly a new OS? why would that be? oh right.... cause they got issues. hmmm... maybe you should reveal some of your secrets.
The 2000xl... what issues do we have with that machine? Well, yes the screen might die on you eventually.... however when has there been an entire forum department complaining of crashing XL's? Never.
Therefor, yes... the popular opinion according to proof by hundreds and thousands of users would indicate that the XL would be more reliable then the 5000. Perhaps hundreds of pissed off 5k users were not using the machine the same way as you use your two that work flawlessly with 0 problems.
point is, if I had to pick a machine and I was getting it for free, I would only pick the 5k because it is worth more. If I had to buy one second hand... XL over 5000.

BUT you don't own nor have you owned a 5k so you are just going by internet dribble, nothing more.
One of the best things about owning something is you can tell when people are trolling.
Unfortunately most of the post in the 5k section are made by people who don't even own one.
They don't even realize that you can see through their post.

You're arguing that all the people who complain about Akai's lack of support and the buggy os are trolls? Really?
Well I own a 2kxl and the screen is bright and shiny and none of the pixels are missing. Therefore, I can tell that everyone who complains about the dead screens are trolls. They just get off making us 2k owners paranoid about our screens.

Who cares if I owned one or not.... why would people who dont own a 5k want an OS fix if it doesn't apply to them? c'mon son, you aren't even denying that the problems exists.... you just are saying that they haven't happened to you personally. Has your screen started burning and smoking? I dont need to own one to see the proof in a youtube video posted by an owner. not saying all of them do that but you get my point. The problems with the 5k were not invented by people who dont own the machine.
AND even if all of the 5k section people were real owners it would still be internet dribble wouldn't it since nobody here is heading down to a friends house to test the 5k personally... this includes yourself... you are part of the internet dribble we call an online forum. We are here for internet dribble.
Great that you got 2 prestine 5000's that do every advertised feature with out having to find workarounds to avoid crashes... I'm happy for ya, but then again... you and me both aren't owners of screwed up 5ks... so we both just internet dribblin' as you would put it.
Now, what ever your thoughts on the 5k boil down to doesn't change what I would buy second hand.

IMHO... 2500 w/ JJOS > 2KXL or 5000.... and I own a 2KXL and borrowed a friends 5000.

To séance, the OP don't let yourself get caught up in believing the 2kxl is a better choice than the 5k, 4k or a JJ MP.
Funny how people just don't get that you can easily tell the difference between someone who owns something and someone who doesn't.
It's the same as people talking about the MV, you can tell if they have one or are just repeating sh*t.
Big difference between people having problems with 5k's and people posting saying they have problems on a nonexisting 5k.
These same people who you can easily tell don't have a 5k because of obvious flaws in things they post.
@k_roc, the 2k had a jacked up contrast level to compensate for the non-tilt display.
The early 2kxl had a jacked up contrast level as well, that was adjusted on later 2kxl's.
That's the reason for the display problems.
When they first came out 2k's could blind you in a dark room.

Though I might not own either of the two, I have some interest in dealing with both since I work with two of my long time friends where each has one or the other.
Now the kat with the 5k is still a novice with his, but not a novice when it comes to working his roland r8.
It takes some getting use to when it comes to navigating on the 5k, especially if you're use to using a 4k.
Def a different landscape to work on and not some imaginative b.s. that gets floated around through hearsay.
I always wondered about those that seem so knowledgable in many aspects of music making but don't have the resources to back up their claims.
This internet sh!t is really getting outta hand these days.

So he said that it has already been repaired before and this is the second time his screen died and he was buying parts to try and fix it.
What would make you stick with that product?
Why would he not send it back to Akai for free repair like they asked?
