Yes! Another MPC VS MPC thread. Now that you guys have had sometime with the new REN. Where does the 5000 stand? In your opinion is either or better? or just simply the same? For people interested in buying a 5000 would it still be worth it? I guess you can say it depends on how you want your work flow to be but at the end of the day, both machines are modern so in a general sense the work flow should be similar shouldn't it? I guess my stupid question would be whats the difference? (besides the obvious, like actual hardware and controller, audio interface etc etc)

The Ren's sequencer and effects are directly ported over from the MPC5000. This is according to peteblues on the Gearslutz forum who is one of the MPC software developers.

* If you buy the 5000 you should do so knowing that whatever you buy is the final product without the expectation of an update of any kind.

It looks like an updated 5000 to me...without the the synth, with the difference being that the OS is in your Desktop/Laptop CPU instead of the Midi Controller/Hardware. The 5000 even has vintage mode. I believe they call it Old School Compressor or something like that.

For what it's worth, I've got a 5000 (and 2500) with a Studio on the way. Someday...I digress. Fortunately for me I've had none of the issues a whole lot of folks have had with their 5000. I absolutely love it. Got her MIDI'd up with Reason 6.5, lovely. Just copping a Studio (preordered through Turntable Lab) to have a more portable option when I needs to watch my newborn...

Thanks for moving this thread back up!

So in anticipation of the Renaissance, I went to play with an MPC 1000 at GC and told myself:

"I wont be intimidated by this hardware and I am not leaving until I come up with a groove."

See I am from a software and controller sequence environment but it took me all but 25mins with learning curve included to come with a banger that even had a couple guys behind me head boppin'

I previously got attracted to the idea of the Ren beacuse I have always wanted that MPC workflow but loved DAW style MIDI editing. But now that I see how easy it is to fiddle with an MPC, and I hear the 5000 has got piano roll type edit, Should I be looking at a 5000 instead if I want to avoid all the Ren's bug troubles and CPU dependence?

With the 5000, I'll get bunch of outs, I'll get stand alone functionality. I also planned on using the Ren as traditional MPC so in other words, I dont care for it hosting any VSTs, just want to sequence my hardware modules and VSTs synced with pro tools where Ill dump the audio for final mix.

So 5000 or Ren? is one punchier than the other, will any suffice looking at my workflow history and intent above? MIDI piano roll (chromatic) editing with a mouse is great but is it that much better than the way it is done on the 5000?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help a brother spend his cash right, any insights are DEEPLY APPRECIATED! Much to love to my fellow music makers :-D

So I guess you are advising me to give up my desire for any MPC, give up my DAW and run with APC and Ableton. Not for me just yet thanks.

But I read a lot of the bugs on the 5000 from the link you sent me and yeah that's scary stuff. So the 2500 then?

Im sure all have their bugs, but I have my mind made up to sample and sequence on an MPC synced to my DAW, driving my VSTs and Hardware Modules. What do you guys advise? a legacy MPC? if so which? or the Renaissance?

(PS: Renaissance will be on a separate laptop I already have. In essence, I'll use the same way I'd use the leagcy MPC)

I apprecitae the repsonses in advance, thanks :)

@2toxic: It seems that the Ren/Studio software has been unsuccessful. If I were you, I would skip it. You should definitely look for

I think that's a good suggestion. Even at overpriced GC I recently saw a maxed 2500 for $800. While I have seen 5000's go as low as $1000, I still think a 2500 might be a better option, JJOS obviously the main draw. Lose the synth and extra q-links, but gain an OS that's constantly updated and bug fixed. Plus if you have a computer you likely already have synths that match the quality level of the Fusion synth engine in the 5000.

I'd recommend 2500 w/ latest JJOS. If u need the XL screen is up to you.
