You like the Akai midi timing. We've all heard about that infamous MPC groove. The Ren has this out of the box.

ignorance :Sigh:

still a good article regardless - i think that midi timing thing was just trying to throw it a bone. mostly good points otherwise. especially about how foreign the maschine workflow could be to a diehard mpc head.

it's not a bad article. i find the "breakdown" a bit misleading , for example if like me ...

you're used to an MPC workflow
experienced to software
make sample based music
have a large sample library
have a bunch of hardware

then i'm sat in the middle .
straddling the comparison. :?:

I don't know where machine is on NI's radar, are they cooking up something gnarly or just busy dicking around releasing teaser videos for new shit. :hmmm:

If NI are on it... it's hard to see a time when they wont have the upper hand on Akai, just due to the headstart they have. say what you like about the sequencer, Machine is crazy stable. I still have my XL plugged in but maschine sits so snug in my setup now. The speed you can chuck things on, chop them up and audition them is second to nothing i have used. But then i've never had the pleasure of owning an MP with some JJOS joy. 8)

all that said tho, i've only got to subscribe to this dudes mailing list and i'm already guaranteed to be a better maschine user ! I'll do that as soon as i have wired this good faith money over to Mr Robterskinoo who has just emailed me, he's stuck in Nigeria apparently the poor chap. Just needs a bit of cash to get back and then he's mailing me close to a million dollars. Actually, then i'll have "money to blow" and cover all this articles breakdown. :-D

I thought his opinion was fair and balanced.

But he was wrong(ish) about the midi timing
Dude - if you read this both maschine and the Ren are sample accurate. They will both equally groove as good as the user programmes their sequence. Swing is not a magical phenomena - its a simple reproduceable consequence of note shifting. Hardware MPCs did it so well because their internal clocks are super tight. Nothing to do with mythology and fairy tales. essentially the internal midi timing of of the Ren and Maschine is rock solid sample accurate.

I can't get scientific with it but I own both and in my personal opinion , I prefer the Ren's midi timing. I'm not talking about swing here as with the right settings, they're both practically identical when applying the right swing settings though it is arguably easier to get better results on the MPC. Most probably due to the limited range to choose from on the MPC Ren (50-75) when compared to the Maschine (0-100%).

There is a nuanced feel about the MPC sequencer when recording and playing back things such as drums that I just can't replicate on the MK2 (and no, i'm not a noob 8) ). It's no deal breaker for me but I did notice it almost immediately when first using the MK2..

The only way to end this is open up a part on the forum for beat thang users

So the haters have a new home...

Use the groovebox which is best for your own workflow!!!!

Wow cares what your favorite producer is using he could also do it on any other groovebox!!!

Nah, it is true. You have to use both to understand! One of those things you have to see for yourself! Mainly has to do with how the two machines handle played notes when quantize is turned on.

Another thing I've noticed sometimes with Maschine is that even with quantize off, the notes sometimes don't record exactly where I play the pad. It'll trigger perfectly when I hit the pad, but where it actually places the notes is several ticks later at times and I find myself having to nudge the notes back to that tight space I wanted it. At the end of the day, it's easy to get the groove you want.

Sorry to cut this one short, but there are two other 'Ren vs Maschine' threads which are already well developed and run into several pages. Comments are welcome there. As they say, "Two is company, three is a crowd".
