If it's just a hobby then it doesn't matter what MPC a person buys. He said it himself, he has the MPC X and uses 50% of it... but my guess would be around 15%. I've seen his videos and they're geared toward beginners and novices, so what he's saying is a good gauge for his audience.

Just ask yourself what you want an older MPC for.
The swing, the sound, "it's what dilla used", for instagram pics --> better off getting a new mpc
Are you ready to commit to maintaining it and upgrading it so it's compatible with the rest of your setup? Cf card, usb, etc, RAM upgrade if it's not already got it, screen maintenence, etc. no --> new mpc
Otherwise go for it.
Sidenote, I got the same Ikea chair as him. :smoker:

I loved the simplicity of 2kxl, he's right, it's a focused machine that does what it does and that's it.

I love the diff filters, eq's and routing in X. It's something I always wanted in a new mpc. I used and loved all of that in the 4k. One of the first things I did was compare 4k functions I frequently used (not you, ME, ones that I USE, before yall get panties in bunches) to functions in X. I found X lacking a bit but excelling in other ways. The WAY they were implemented was diff in X and at first put me off, I just needed to get used to it, and I did.

New or old, get whatever you want, balance that with something that inspires you and you have your golden egg after that. Not all the time we get something we crave and then it doesn't move your soul. So find that balance, go forth and bang pads.

Once you find an instrument you really know, I doubt u want to change.

I will be using the MPC LIVE for the next 10 years+. AKAI will drop some new ish they swear I need but I will cop a used MPC LIVE when this 1 breaks. I may actually stop updating the OS this year or next. Major UI updates prolly will piss me off.

If you made bangers for 4-5 summers on a mpc4000, I would just get another 1 before I learn a new machine. If the MPC is the center of your studio setup, then it is the center of your sound. A new interface, new pads/knobs & new FX would change your workflow & could ruin your sound . . . . . .

I admit a newbie is probably better off with a mpc ONE or akai force. Why get locked into some old hardware that doesn’t have an SD card . . . . . .

a lot of these people are “drum machine collectors”

it’s like guns. I rec every 1 who is responsible have 1-2 guns for hunting/self-defense. I know “collectors” who have 2-3 fancy rifles that they haven’t touched in 12-16 months because they have an arsenal of 10-20 guns. My MPC will slap me for cheating if I ignore her for more than a month ;-)

Yes, collecting is nice until it's not. What once brought joy and freedom, soon become a chore and a prison.

Yeah... I guess you guys are right on his audience.

I am by no means saying the 4k is the end all be all... but the way he passed it off as "just a sampler" had me scratching my head... that thing is crazy deep... and a lot of the things that are nice on the new MPC line help streamline things for new users way more than the 4k ever will. Later ya'll.

I should mention that a $1000 US dollars is a lot of $$$ in some corners of the world. I’ve had talks with my friends from Senegal / Mexico city / Nigeria about expanding beat culture’s presence in their home countries.

SOFTWARE is cool but A used mpc / used roland SP / NEW electribe for $200-400 is a game changer for these peoples. We are talking about rounding up some cheap mpc1000s to take with us out of the country. With JJOS & the right synth/drum machine, this machine was portable & powerful & reliable.

I'm assuming you meant to say 2KXL, so I will read it as so. :-D But yes he's talking to his audience, which for the most part are beginners and novice. Power user and enthusiast tend to have different topics of discussion. Perhaps not which machine to buy, but why and how they use this particular machine, in this particular situation, during this session.

I watched it as well. I was a bit confused why he was making this video when he already did one on the same topic a month before.

He did however say in the previous video that part of the reason why he got an XL is for the views.

If you add wood sides, 8 outs, cf card, and vinyl skin it's: $2200
