Why do people recommend mpc1000, when the pads are known to stop functioning, even by people who this has happened to?

I understand it has the JJ OS going for it, but I'd like to think an mpc as a solid machine that will last me years of use, but I can't justify spending much money on something that breaks shortly after 1 year.

Correct me if I am wrong, and thanks in advance.

I feel what you saying, I honestly only use the 2kxl myself. I thinks people go for the 1k for the expanded memory, fx's, stock multple outs, usb, harddrive option and the resampling capability. also alot of peolp are too lazy to just put a card reader in a old 2kxl and refuse to work with floppies or zips. I don't know never had a 1k thats just my opinion. since I can't resample with my xl I think about buying a second sampler to sample my create programs to and swap back and forth with. any unit with a spdif in and out that has the same sample format and bit rate would work and I told myself if I saw a 1k for dirt cheap I would get it

1k is a great mpc! Sure the pads aren't the best but people have found ways around this. They are definitely usable and are cheap to replace which can be done 1 at a time, not as a whole sheet like other mpc's.

For $600 or so used you get a great sequencer, effects, master comp and eq, and more outs than about 65% of all mpc's out there. It is not built like a toy either, it is a pretty solid machine (just not the data wheel so much)

I had one, and sold it for a 2kxl, and i think both machines are truly equal...I would not go back to the 1k personally but for many people it is a good choice. BTW the workflow on the 1k is great if you work inside 1 box.
