I am extremely new to the sampler world and I am looking at purchasing one. I know you guys are mpc fans, but I was wondering if anyone can give me an honest unbiased comparison between the MPC 1000 and the Roland MC 808? Does anyone have experience with both? At this point I am leaning toward the MPC 1000 but the roland appears to have some tempting features too.

Thanks... Kevin

I have a 1000 and an mc-909 and use them together, they love each other.
I used the 909 for a long time before I got the 1000 and it was dope but it just depends on what youre gonna be doing. The 808 and 909 are beasts on stage, but together with the 1000? oh man, theyre fun

Yeah, I guess I should have stated what my purpose for wanting one is. I am a drummer in a band and I currently play to a sample/loop tracks that sometimes has electronic drum beats, intros, fills, etc. in them. Realizing that it would be much more interactive and impressive to perform these myself instead of merely playing over them on a track, I have decided to look at samplers. Obviously the drum machine/ beat making qualities of the machine will be a big part of what I will be doing. Hope this helps!

If you're going to be programing mostly drums I'd go with the 1000.

the 1000 is awesome for programming drums, but as for playing drums, there are 2 things you need to consider -

1 - possibility of bad pads
2 - the pads are smalelr than old mpc pads.

the first is not always the case, but blah blah blah information on 1k pads is so often repeated it makes me wanna puke

the 2nd - if you've not used mpcs before don't sweat it that won't cause you any grief.

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY - you're looking for ease of sampling AND EVEN MORE, you're looking for the ability to create DETAILED PROGRAMS. i dont know about the MC but i do know that the MPC has wonderful program software. you can set a pad to play 4 different notes depending on how hard you hit it. you can set the mpc to play your pad with a softer, brushed sound at lower strikes than higher ones. same with filter - the softer the hit, the more "cut" the highs.

and so on. that's why i love the mpc1000 for drumming. get good enough at it, and you should be excellent live. it will take time though - years possibly.

finally - the biggest issue in all case is control surface. which has the most intuitive control surface for playing drums? i'd say the mpc1000. HOWEVER, i'm gonna say it - mpc pads are NOT the best you can get for drumming, at all. there are far better possibilities. at this point, i'm looking ahead, but i'm working on a device that you wear on your hands that employs pressuer sensors hooked up to a midi sending device. essentially, fingers control snares, hats, and other items, wrists control kicks, and thumbs cyms. this would be both more intuitive for playing and also better for a live performance - you could really go crazy!

I occassionaly run sound for my buddy's band and their drummer uses a 1k. He uses electronic pads midi'd to the MPC.
