SOUND of MPC500 vs other MPCs ?

what are your thoughts..
same or different ?

Just copped the 500 to have something for work and boring camp trips..
I use 2000XL and 1K on a daily basis and there are certain sound/tone differences between the two.
XL sounding less punchier but warmer VS 1K being punchier but with harsher , less selective kind of raw highs.

Has anyone tested the 500 against other machines?
I need to know before I get too friendly with it.

I have the mpc 500, mpc2000xl and the s950.

I agree that the mpc2kxl have an warmer and punchier sound than the mpc500. On the other hand The mpc 500 has a clearer but much thinner sound than the mpc2kxl( also a bit lower in volume than the mpc2kxl.)
The s950 has the darkest, most unnatural sound than the other two,
But it has the highest output then any other synth/sampler I ever heard,
shit peaks red on my mixing desk whenever having the monitor output half way up on the vol knob.

So, the mpc500 has the clearest, but thinnest sound.
the mpc2000xl has a even warmer and punchier than the 500
and the s950. has the punchiest but most lo-fi of 'em all(19000hz)

why is it when i sample into the 500 the output sound is low, but when i go into ''trim mode'' the sound that i sampled is loud?

That is a good question. I've notcied that also. But when i have a sample that sounds low, I just put it in my pc and run audacity and increase the gain a little bit. Then put the file back on my cf card and back in the 500.

To fix that, on the mpc it self, Press mode + pad 6
and scroll to Sample level, press that pad you set the sample to, and increase the default 70 to whatever you like...Max is 100

Thats what I usually try to do unless the sample is even too low for that to be effective.

that's what i do too, but it's still louder in trim mode for some reason? oh wells...

Compared to the MPC4000, the MPC500 sounds real dirty! Certain hi hat sounds that sound really thin and clear on the MPC4000 actually distort a bit on the MPC500. It's funny, there's actual pitch variations between the two aswell. No idea what could be causing that. The MPC500 is about 12db lower. But still, I love how it sounds.

This might be caused by a flaw on the 500. When you use the NORMALIZE function, it tends to clip a bit of the amplitude!!! This is really bad!

Ahh ok. I didn't normalize the samples on the MPC, but did normalize them on in Sound forge. Maybe normalizing them to -0.1 db would fix the problem? I'll give it a try some time. A few other hi hat samples I have actually do this on the MPC4000 also.

I miss a function that could turn the volume up and down in percentage inside the trim mode, and assign it directly in the wave. This way clipping could be avoidet. It is actually not the normalize function thats causing the clipping, ut occours when a sample is assigned to a pad! Weird!!!

Yeah, so do I....

But waveform editing is something I miss a bit too, but its all good because I got a 1000 also....

Maybe a JJ os will come out and make the OS tighter....

THIS IS WHAT I LOVE ABOUT MPCS

They each have their own unique sound to them........

The 500's is abit clearer but yet its got a X factor i cant Identify......I love my 500...
