4K Vs Kontakt, EXS24 etc. FEATURES - WHO WANTS THEM, REALLY?

Ive been using Logic for a few years now and and have been using the 4000 as the sequencer and to play drum samples, mainly.
To play and create sample instruments I have been using the sampler in Logic (EXS24). That was until the other day when I was looking deeper into keygroups on the 4000. The reason I had original stayed away from it was because it didnt seem that logical but once you get your head around the way to operate it, it seems that it can offer some things that the EXS24 cant (also there are other things that it cant do such as exponential curves on the envelopes). I think it may also have the potential to create instruments faster.
One of the other main benefits is that the mpc is always going to feel more hands on than clicking around a screen with a mouse.

So my question is:

When creating sample instruments which option do you go for? Do you use the 4k to create sample instruments or do you use Kontakt, EXS24 or any of the other DAW samplers?


You see I was looking at a Kontakt demo video, Yes it offers everything. All kinds of crazy stuff, but really do you want any of this? it might be useful for techno or some other really electronic music but sometimes I think too many features can hold you back and end up taking you in the wrong direction.
Im talking about hip hop. It isnt about making crazy sounds, is it? Listen to Dr dre the sounds are fairly simple (to the ear), but they are all exactly right. Any modulation is so subtle you hardly ever notice it.

Its the same for synths. You can get some crazy sounds out of them nowerdays, but do they ever sound as good as a mini moog. It has less features but that definately doesnt make it a weaker synth. Does it? If so why do they demand such high prices on the 2nd hand market? Same with the mpc3000. Not so many features, right?

Some of the best music was decades ago. They didnt have any of the things we have our hands on now, but that didnt hold anyone back.

Any thoughts, reply. It would be really interesting to hear what people are feeling on this....

personally, I dont think it really matters. Its the person who makes the music and not the machine..

I do think more options (Kontakt for example), could result in more interesting sounds. Electronic generated sounds and electronic music are two separate things nowadays.
I think youre a little bit closed minded with your statement.

You dont think it matters? Dont people choose the equipment they use because of what it brings to the table? musicians like certain synths for the sounds they provide. People choose to use mpc's for loads of reasons
over creating music in other ways. Why have you got an mpc? Get rid of it if it doesnt matter and make your music all on pc. If you had a sampler which didnt give you any control over the attack would that not make a difference to the sound that came out of it. According to you it would be the persons fault and not the machines.

Im getting a lot more interesting sounds through the filters on the mpc. The quality of the filters play one of the most important parts when shaping a sound and getting the sound that you want. You can patch up 2 different synths in exactly the same way and it will give you two different sounds. You will have a preference. That was what my original post was about.

I might have worded it a bit wrong. Its just that most of us I suspect have lots of different ways of doing the same thing nowerdays and I was wondering if anyone had done what I had originally done and assumed that the Logic sampler would result in better sampler instruments. Im starting to think that I will build all sampler instruments in the mpc from now on.

I dont know why you think Im closed minded. Im just interested in knowing if people are coming to the same conclusions as me.
Its not that I think that lots of options are bad. Obviously it will add to your pallet. The thing is I suspect a lot of people are buying up lot of crazy pieces of equipment and never getting to know how to use them properly.

I sample into the 4k, then port the samples over to PC via ak.sys for detailed editing (if needed). I sequence all MIDI data in the MPC......

It is up to you the user. I for one use both Battery, EXS, Ultrabeat along with my 4k. Different paradigm everything comes down to the user and working with his tools. It isn`t about whether software vs hardware is better. It is about different users working different from each other and how the music comes out in the end. Anyways no more sample libirary conversions for me I just keep all of that shit in the box. There are far more software sample libraries these days.
