Syncing with DAW

I've recently purchased the Mpc 1000 and I'm having some trouble recording the track into my DAW (Logic studio .

My aim is to use the Mpc for some initial drum sequencing then track them into logic and finish the song.

I have got as far as 'pressing play on my DAW and the Mpc sync's and plays nicely in time'. But when i try to record the tracks i get a mad distorting, buzzing sound. I have no clue what to do next...

Can anyone help?

I got this Tutorial PM'ed by joeybells some months ago. I wanted to use it for my manual, but I didn't have the time to put it in yet... hope this helps you.

This is how to set up so the MPC is the master, keeping it's timing and groove.

Be sure to monitor the mpc audio with direct monitoring (available on most I/O devices), v. important, if you don't, you'll have alot more hassle with latency, meaning you'd have to go and fiddle with MTC delay settings in Preferences/Midi/Sync (which is actually quite easy.

Logic Settings:

In - File / Song Settings / Synchronisation / Midi

Make sure Midi Clock is not set to transmit (uncheck box if needed)
Make sure Transmit MTC is unchecked
Make sure Transmit MMC is checked
Make sure Listen to MMC input is unchecked

In - File / Song Settings / Synchronisation / General

Sync Mode = "MTC" (also check the Auto Enable MTC box)
Set frame rate to "25 FPS"
Set Validate MTC to "always"
set 'Bar Position' to "1 1 1 1",
set 'Plays at SMPTE' to "0 : 0 : 0 : 0" (VERY important)

ALL the above settings are song settings so you would have to save the Logic song as a template if you want these settings to be in effect every time you start a new song, otherwise would have to be done manually every time.


MPC settings:

In sync page (MODE+9 - F2)

Sync In = Slave
Mode:OFF
Recieve MMC: ON (This means Logic transport [play, stop etc] will trigger the MPC)

Sync Out = Master
Mode: MIDI TIME CODE
Frame Rate: 25
Send MMC: OFF

That was a very detailed and useful reply. I am moving in the same direction (integrating the MPC with Logic) as soon as I save up for a new computer.

My one question is....in the example described above the MPC is the slave. Does that mean you will lose the tight sequencing and quantization of the MPC.

Is there a way for the MPC to be the master when synching with a DAW?

I followed these directions and my MPC 1000 is synced as to if I were to press play or stop in Logic, but it won't record my song into Logic from my MPC...could you help me?

good stuff.
i use the 25 setting too.
that is what kept my MIDI timing off for months before figuring that out on my own.

Mick....I think your problem is setting up the Logic enviornment. My understanding is syncing the mp and logic is step 1. There is more to do on the Logic side (depending on how you want it all to work)

I followed the steps that JoeyBall worked out (nice one!). I think I'm on the right track but things are still weird.
For example the 'start', 'stop', 'record' etc buttons on the Logic transport have no effect. When I press start or record on the MPC the Logic transport starts ticking along. While I am recording the timeline thing in the Logic arrange windown turns blue. When I stop the MP Logic stops too and the blue colour goes away.

When I press my midi keyboard the note registers in the Logic transport. If I add an instrument then it sounds when I press the midi key. However if I press record on the MP and try the same thing, the note registers in the transport but doesn't sound.

Worse of all pressing the pads on the MP does not register a note in the logic transport and I can't play instruments using the pads.

Sorry if I seem like an idiot, I know the set up is not complete.

Finally, there were a few options in the Logic synch dialog which were not mentioned in Joey's tutorial.
Maybe they are not important but I have added them to Joey's tutorial with question marks

auto-enable external sync = if a sync signal is received , logic will automatically sync to it as slave.

external stop ends record mode= if while recording in logic you press stop on an external machine (like mpc1000) that is acting as sync master, it will stop recording in logic...



Auto Detect Format MTC = click this if you want logic to automatically detect the incoming MTC's format.

Thanks dude. I messed around last night and have made some good progress. I'm getting closed.

After tweaking the midi settings I know have the MPC as the master synced to Logic. When I press play/stop/record on the MPC it triggers the same action on Logic. Better still I can trigger softsynths in Logic using the pads on the MPC.

Great.

Only downside is that midi data I played gets recorded in the MPC but not in Logic. Is there any way so that note data can be recorded in piano roll of Logic as well as the MPC?

I'm also having the issue where the first note or two are a bit distorted/glitchy but I guess that has to do with the MPC and Logic needed some time to get synched up. I know there is a workaround for this problem, just have to work it out.

The main hassle is the midi data note being recorded in Logic

this forums had a syncing feeling for the last 2 weeks

to get those midi notes recording in logic , [on the mpc1ooo] turn the midi out on (ReadTheOnlineManual to learn how)...and then assign a midi channel to whatever track(s) you wanna transmit on, (like a channel for keys, another for bass, another for sample loop, anther for hihats, another for kick, whatever..), and then record into logic. if you want to see all those different channels separated in logic after recording , you can select the function "demix by event channel"...


personally, i think its WAAAAY easier to just save the sequence as a midi file inside the mpc1000, and then open that midi file up in logic.....thats how i do it...only thing is not all the stuff is translateable to midi, like 16-levels stuff , etc...

do anyone know how to do this with protools le??
