I'm testing out OS 2 XL 1.12 on my MPC 1000 before I decide whether to purchase it. While testing it, I found this problem. When using a MIDI keyboard to trigger MPC pad samples, the mute groups do not respond to the pad samples via MIDI keyboard. For example, if I have open and closed hi-hats assigned to mute group 1 and hit their pads respectively, they cut each other properly as expected. However, if I trigger the same open and closed hats via MIDI keyboard, they do not cut each other like they should. This problem only exists in OS 2 XL, not OS 2.

I think I should report this.

Another thing I found out is CHORD doesn't seem to have any effect when playing via MIDI keyboard. It only works when using the pads. I'm not sure if this really a bug though. Maybe this was by design. However, If this was how CHORD was intentionally implemented, I definitely find it quite strange. It's not a real deal breaker though. I might learn to like it eventually but I'd just have to get used to it.

On the other hand, the mute group problem is somewhat of a deal breaker. Although there are workarounds, it still intereferes with the workflow just a tad. Maybe I'm being a bit picky here and the MPC pads are great if that's your only piece of gear, but I've grown accustomed to triggering drums with a MIDI keyboard set up to GM drum mapping for years and I personally find drums far more convenient/easier to play this way as opposed to using the MPC pads. It would also be nice if JJ could get note repeat working again via MIDI keyboard too like it does in OS1. I'm not counting on it though. So in the meantime, I'll just have to choose between note repeat via MIDI in OS1 and full ASDR and realtime chop shop in OS 2, OS 2 XL. Until JJ fixes the note repeat for MIDI (that is if they fix it), I think I'll sacrifice that feature for the wonderful additional features of OS 2 anyday!!! I've been wanting ASDR for amp & pitch and realtime chopping for the longest!!! So thank for at least providing these features JJ!!!!

Wow!!! That was quick. I just received my password. I now have a fully functional OS 2XL!!! I will go ahead and report the mute group problem as a bug tomorrow.

I reported the following to JJ concerning this mute group bug:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Program mute group setups are ignored when pad samples are triggered from a MIDI keyboard.

1. Connect a MIDI keyboard to the MPC 1000.

2. Power on the MPC 1000.

3. Set up the MIDI keyboard to trigger MPC pad samples.

4. Load at least two drum samples into memory (example: open hi-hat, and closed hi-hat).

5. Create a new program and enter program mode and assign the first sample (closed hi-hat) to a drum pad (example: A1)

6. Assign the second sample (open hi-hat) to another drum pad (example: A3).

7. Set up both pads to play the samples as one shots and adjust the amp ASDR of each pad so the sample will play completely through after the pad is pressed and released.

8. Assign the pad containing the first sample (closed hi-hat) to a mute group.

9. Assign the pad containing the second sample (open hi-hat) to the same mute group as the first pad.

10. In program mode, set "PLAY:" to "POLY" at the top.

11. Trigger the first pad and the second pad rapidly in an alternating fashion. (examples: close hi-hat, open hi-hat, close hi-hat, open hi-hat, etc..)

12. Rapidly trigger the two MIDI notes on the MIDI keyboard in an alternating fashion that corresponds to the same samples (example: open hi-hat and closed hi-hat) assigned to the two pads in the same mute group.

Results:

The two samples (open hi-hat and closed hi-hat) cut each other properly as expected when triggered from the MPC pads. However, the samples do not cut each other properly when they are triggered from the MIDI keyboard. Instead, mute groups are ignored when the samples are triggered from the MIDI keyboard.

I received the following response directly from JJ concerning this issue:

Thank you for the bug report. The bug has been checked. The bug is corrected by the next version. (V1.13) Thank you. >Program mute group setups are ignored when pad samples are triggered from a MIDI keyboard.

Wow!!! I have to definitely compliment JJ on they're quick response and for quickly addressing user's issues. As you've just read, this problem will be resolved in the next release.

Thank you JJ!!!!!!

Yesterday, I received the following response from JJ concerning this bug:

Since OS2XL differs in other OS's and specifications, if this is corrected, a trouble will produce it in other functions. Therefore, in OS2XL, it does not work to the MIDI input NOTO.MUTE of a target pad and a simult pad are also the same. Thank you.

Looks like this bug will remain because trying to fix it would potentially cause problems with other functions. Well, at least it was investigated.

Thanks JJ.
