how often do you use the step editor?

i've been using the MPC 1k for about 6 months now and honestly have underused the seq edit and step edit features. I've recently tried to get my head around the step edit feature and it seems kind of awkward, especially when you want to program in large amounts of stuff (not on the fly.) How much do you all use these features? Does any one know any good tutorials for step editing?

The loop edit mode in JJOS2 is very useful. I use it all the time. Which JJOS are you on?

I'm on jjos 1. I'm, used to using an rm1x for list editing, so its a bit different and doesnt feel at all like i'm in control with it. in regards to the other editors such as the grid entry, i've had mixed luck there, too. does jjos2 fix any of the programming stuff? As much as i love some of the features of this jjos, its crashing on me often, telling me that i'm out of ram when i only have <5 megs of samples loaded, and has a number of little quirks that have really frustrated me as of late. Im thinking that coming to terms with the step editor will push me ahead so im anxious to really learn what the box can do before juping to conclusions.

Os 2 is superior to OS 1 in many ways. Check the comparison chart and the manuals on JJ's site.

The OS should not be crashing on you. Try holding down the erase button as you power up the MPC to reset all your settings (it basically clears all of your preferences).

Also, the JJ OS is much more RAM hungry than the Akai OS. If you haven't already you should definitely max out the MPCs internal RAM.

if you are talkin about the regular step editor where it's just basically lines of text, that's pretty difficult to work with. but if you get OS2 there's the grid editor which is pretty good for correcting mistakes or doing simple stuff

Thanks for the feedback. that's the one i was wondering about. With the way i used to work, everything was pretty manageable from the list editor. how is jjos2's different in terms of workflow/feel (i already looked at the differences on the website.)


I think soon I'll have to get the ram upgrade and I'm also thinking about the jjos 2. any suggestions on good places to get ram? I'm reluctant to just order from just anywhere online.

ram = ebay for cheap.

jjos = i prefer jjos1 over jjos2, but that's just me. i registered all the way to jjos2xl and still only use jjos1 now.

I started with the 2000xl so I use the step editor exclusively. I never use the grid editor.

I just wish the step editor only displayed the events triggered at the current step like it did on the 2000xl rather than an entire list of all events on the track. that's been one of my gripes for a while.

Agreed. Although I use both the step editor (for de-bugging) and grid edit (mostly for note nudge) ((btw, grid edit essentially allows you to see everything while pin-pointing a specific event)), it would be nice to have the option to filter the step edit to a single event.
