Are my songs safe after i upgrade?

I've always been curious about the jjos, and i know that it will definitely be worth my money. But the only thing that has prevented me from buying it is not being sure of what happens to the beats i've already made, as i'm sure you have to re-format the memory card when jjos is installed.

For one i'd like to know if it's possible for me to re-load my songs onto the jjos, and for two would like to know if this causes any problems with the sequences, programs or samples.

First back all your work up. Copy it to your computer or something.

Second, there are incompatibilities all around. Depends on which version of JJ you're upgrading to. Your best bet is to load up the old OS to work on old songs.

when i save it to my pc is there a particular program that i should use, as my pc doesn't recognise automatically things like mpc sequences or programs. will it be okay then re-loading that stuff onto a compact flash card without fear of the memory being scrambled or something?

what's the best OS to use? isn't the latest going to be the greatest?

Your stuff won't get scrambled if you save it to your PC. Save it to your PC, load JJ OS, reformat the CF, the put your stuff back on the CF. I wouldn't recommend it if there was a chance you would lose your beats....

Is newer better? I dunno a 5k is newer than a 3k, but plenty of people still use the 3k... Best OS is a matter of opinion. Once you buy OS1 you can try OS2 and OS2XL for free, so you be the judge.

I believe the free JJ OS (and maybe even OS1, but I'm not sure) is completely backwards compatible with tracks done in the Akai OS. But if you try to open up those beats in OS2 or OS2XL then you may run into problems. But you can always just load the samples and redo the beat. Or you can switch back and forth between all the available OS versions as you wish.

Forget all the nonsense.
What you need to do is get another card format for JJ and use that with with the JJ OS.
You won't be able to functionally load Akai OS work on the JJ OS so your best bet is to keep them intact so you can load the Akai OS and use them if you need to got back to some old work.

thanks a lot man, i suppose i should just buy the damn thing already and discover the many frustrations i will no doubt encounter. won't be able to afford it untill next friday so i'll keep working on these beats (in vain) untill then!
