now I feel like i'm missing out on something good cos I NEVER set my sequences to 8/4....please elaborate as to what benefits you get from this.

When doubling the tempo and playing half speed, setting your bars to 8/4 keeps your half-tempo-played bars at bar length.
I don't double tempo all the time though. I'm gonna check out loop edit some more now mithinks.. I've never really used it.
