16 MB = 38 sec sampling time?

16 MB = 38 sec sampling time?

Hello, I was reading the "Beat Making on the MPC for JJOS" ebook I bought awhile back and it says,

If you have no memory expansion in your MPC, you have 2 minutes 16 seconds of sampling time, or twice as much if you are sampling in mono...


I only have the default 16 MB, and even with the autoload OFF, I'm only seeing 38 seconds of sampling time when I hit the "window" button, there has to be something I'm doing wrong, right?

I've googled the hell out of this and searched these forums and have not found an answer to this! Thank you for any replies.

what is 38 seconds x2?
also, what is different about a stereo sample compared to a mono sample?

Anyway, there's something fishy going on here.

That book quotes the same sampletime figure that's on Akai's website, but the math is wrong. A stereo, 60 second wav file (at 16/44) is about 10mb in size. That means that 16mb should hold about 90 seconds in stereo, or 180 seconds in mono.

But Akai's website says 16mb = 136 seconds mono, and your mpc says 38 seconds (presumably stereo). WTF?

I'm not sure but I'd bet that you have less memory dedicated to he SEQ parameters in the Akai OS. (When I switch my mpc on with JJOS2XL 2.12 I have 4,6mb free for that purpose)

make sure you delete all the default sequences and samples, then you should have more sample time to play with before your new RAM arrives.

he should be alright dude, i can't be sure but i think i have the same, and the MPC automatically reads half the memory.
