Hey, im having problems with the comrpressor on the mp 1000 with jj os..

What i really want is a sound like Elaquent and J's donuts, but every time im messing with the master compressor, it sounds like nightmare.

Any ideas guys?

Yeah, a freebie Akai software compressor will never sound as good as a proper studio unit.

i like to set the attack, slow'ish. the release a bit slower. the gain +3 / +6, and the threshold very low -24 / -32 , with a very high ratio 99/40:1.

with this u get the delayed squish u seem dto desire re: dilla, and the distance (lack of true punch) in these mixes, but yeah as the guy above said, the subtleties in the original sound can get lost, but also can give rise to a very appealing finish depending on the listener - its all a matter of taste......

to some it'll sound like u dont know what yer doing, to others it sounds avant-garde,futuristic and beautiful.

oh yeah also, an exaggerated warm eq (crystal highs, 30/40Hz lows, little or no harsh midrange 3khz @ - 6dB and a bit of quiet but long reverb on the source (before the compressor) will also add air that will swirl as it gets compressed.

Dig into the envelopes (as well as the sample start/end points). JJ has a full ADSR with a lot more level sculpting ability than it seems. You can actually emulate various compressor/gate settings on each individual sample.

yes very true, and this can in turn affect how the compressor reacts. so a dual assault on the shape.
