hi

Does anyone here also think that the naming procedure in JJOS is a bit awkward, I mean you either gotta do it with just your right hand, or if you wanna use both hands you gotta turn the data wheel with the left while pressing the right-cursor button with the right hand, I'm right handed and that is awkward for me. I also did a test to see how fast I can type in a word in MPC1000 and my Yamaha Rm1X, I've tried few words with letter number combination, I was able to do the naming in Rm1X almost twice as fast.

I think it would be better if:

1) The letters in the NAME window would be bigger.

2) The cursor in both the name and the character field would blink

3) Letter input would be done by using the input (insert) key as in the picture below.
(cheesy graphics but you get the point)
I don't understand why we need the insert key when the underscore is available in the character box.

4)Capital and small letters grouped in pairs (this would free the A/a key for a potential function) and increase speed.

5)An option to choose how fast the data wheel moves the cursor. I'd like to have an option of two clicks per cursor move.

Image

so looking at the picture you see the cursor blinking on top of the small g, you press input to choose it and the cursor moves to the right, then you choose another character, press input,... and so on

What do you guys think?

p.s. a cool feature in the Cut and Paste menu would be a list of different names, i.e. you'd have an extra button named NAMES, press it and you get a scrollable list of different words that you can copy and the quickly paste into the name field for quick file naming. To add words to the list you'd copy an existing name and paste in there.

It think astronaut is quite alone, in space...

I'm sorry, I don't see the need for any of your suggestions:
1) and 2) are ok, but not of any importance to me.
3) is no good: I use the insert key all the time, having to scroll through the letters to get to underscore would be most annoying.
4) no point at all. See Nym's post.
5) see 4).

So, no support.

...but I do like the name bank idea. For years, I used Minidisk recorders for live recording and other things, many high-end units had that function - I've been missing it, would be great to have it in JJ OS!

having the most recent words as "presets" would be ill.

naming with one hand sucks indeed. would be nice if we could scroll thru the characters with a q-link fader instead of the data wheel.

Nym wrote:you're already doing it the hard way...you know you can type with the pads, right?

I do use the pads once in a while but I find it difficult to see the letters, plus it's hard for me to get used to the layout, it starts with pad 1, I'd rather have it with pad 13 go right and down, just like you would read a book, maybe that's the reason why I can't get accustomed to the mpc layout.

I forgot that the Q1 button is not doing anything in the NAME window, it could be used for character input.

You guys probably have mastered this procedure and can do it with one hand, I find diffcult, especially if I burned some green stuff beforehand

ye the q-link sliders and buttons could perform some helpful functions.

i'm not about to say it couldn't be easier for folks just starting naming on their mpcs
but if i could offer advice it would be to memorize which letter is where so your hands just do it automatically.
that way you don't have to look to see which letter is where, you just bang out a name.
of course i would most prefer to see development go into improving the looping modes (detach LOOP END from sample END POINT) but we all have our favorite FRs of the month

The copy and paste feature is great. I find that entering names with the pads is like a mini game, to see how fast i can get :)

Post like this always remind me of how much JJ has done.Anybody who has spent time naming on the AKAI O.S. knows what I am saying.TYPO

YYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please!

This is so necessary! Have you requested this Nym? I want that shit bad, it's basic sampler feature. A separate release loop would be cool too, but a sustain loop that then releases through the rest of the sample after the loop end would be great.

Let me know if you want to request bomb JJ to get this to happen. Man that would be long overdue.

This is a good idea. A list of common names--snare, kick, hi hat, ect--to select from.
If you dont mind I would like to see also the ability to edit this list of names.

Somewhere in global setting you can enter/edit the list of common names--about 99 names.

a somewhat solution would be to have the option of renaming samples/sequences/programs in the SAVE window (on the left side), just like you can rename pattern/pad banks. I have a folder called !NAMES! on the CF card, so when I go into SAVE mode it shows up on top. I got 5kb empty wave files in that folder with different names, so I can copy the name and paste it. Although I'm not sure if renaming samples/sequences/programs on the left side would automatically update the whole project.

I agree, I mean, nobody can type fast on qwerty at first, you gotta learn where al the letters are. Same with people who are good at texting with a numeric keypad.
