beta testing is mixed bag of fun and frustration.

i'm more comfortable navigating the mpc2500 now. especially after patching in my pads with the silicone gap fix. if anyone has not modded their MPC with the silicone fix, i highly recommend it. to be honest, the pads are practically unusable without it. it's terrible. patch in the silicone, and you go from crap to gold.

anyway, my experience with os128xl has been better than i expected given the list of features that had been removed. the new grid is pretty damn good.

as of right now, QLINK has the following params:

tune, attack, filters, level, pan, layer, attack, decay, transpose (new! i think) velocity, and lfo depth and rate. these are all per PAD - it appears there is not an ALL PADS option yet.

it also has CC, track level, track pan and tempo.

i am finding some bugs, some incomplete screens, and some workflow adjustments that ought to be made. i still very much miss PGM TRIM and TRIM SLICE.

PAD CYCLE from the main screen is more powerful now...very cool functionality there

more details as i continue to work.

Cool thanks for the insight! I'd be curious to know how the PGM-based NDC is working out? That's probably the most exciting feature for me (even if it means I lose backwards compatibility), as I've always considered the ASR method superior. Can the sample display be zoomed? Does the shift button act as a multiplier for start/end point scrolling? How efficient and ergonomic is it with longer samples?

NDC chopping has never been my thing because it caters to more linear choppers/samplers. it's always been a little too much hassle to move the selection of PAD02 to say the 2nd to last transient in the wave. that said, the current NDC concept is better than the previous, with the exception that this new slice function could use a couple of workflow enhancements.

yes, it can be zoomed, don't know if the shift button acts as multiplier because i always zoom way out in order to navigate quickly with the data wheel.

since the slices are limited to 32, it is much less efficient and ergonomic with longer samples than the traditional SLICE in JJos2xl. this is great for linear choppers and mappers. it is extremely quick to map slices to pads and to edit the slices. though the design is missing a could of shortcuts (zooming is entirely done via F keys - i'd prefer the old bar keys zoom) it's pretty smooth.

as of now, there is no way to internally loop individual NDchops in GPE. to me, this is one of two or three major shortcomings in os128xl, but i am confident that it will be addressed.

Thanks for the insight. I should be preordering by the end of the week. I agree looping is almost a must-have, but I also think that better crossfade looping is needed, and modulatable start/end/start+end points would be fantastic!

ASR soul in an MPC body (sigh)... I can dream, right?

this is definitely the way to go, and a long time request of myself & plenty of others. i hope JJ can do it. or at least just put LOOP START and LOOP END in there.

you really want to put as much stuff in GPE as possible. once it's in there, hopefully we'd be able to control it via some sort of internal midi bus or modulate it with the LFOs. this could open up some insane possibilities. the LFOs in JJ OS have a lot of room to grow.

i'm curious about the improvements to PAD CYCLE. does it work with pre-recorded pad hits now? i requested this of Murai a couple months back so i'm curious if it got implemented.

Might be a bit off topic but I just have to ask you what the hell the "silicone gap fix" is?
I've never heard about it before, but if Nym says the 2500's pads are practically unusable without it - I definitely need to find out what it is.

akai MPC/MPD pads have this 1 mm gap in between the rubber pad nipple and the pressure sensor. i used a dot of soft silicone glue to fill this gap by letting it cure on the pad and then setting the pads rightside up on plastic wrap. this way, the silicone fills that 1 mm gap, no more, no less. playing on a set of treated pads is wonderful. mpc stuff makes a felt product like this. i prefer the silicone as it is really flexible and soft and springy.
