I would like do to a large amount of chopping and rearranging, but with midi data instead of the more usual audio... Any suggestions for a good way to do this? I would like to record midi from an e-drum kit first. This means that, along with the notes data, there will be CC msgs for the hihat and snare positional sensing which i want to copy and keep in the correct position wrt the note data..

i am imaging something like recording a drum performance, then chopping it into small pieces (a beat or two long) and assigning these to pads and then playing. its important that I can record or otherwise have a full length midi track when done.

I think I could probably duplicate the track many times, and shift the data earlier by different amounts, which would give me chops. but Im unsure if I should use patterns (solo'd) for this, or individual sequences fired from the next seq screen.

Any other suggestions for building a track composed of short pieces of midi data? would the midi editor be any good for this?

i have never used the feature - but isn't this what jjos 'patterns' are for?

look into that.

"Pad pattern" or "pad to pattern" I believe? Even if it's not what you need you might want to chect that out anyway.. Lets you use the pads to trigger recorded bits of midi as opposed to just single note triggers.

yeah ya just gotta do a bit of work to make em, then you can. They are set to a bar minimum size but you can cut and paste midi data so it is shifted like you want then make pattern of that as they say above.
do a search and you should see a few threads bout em/

of course another option is, assuming a 1 bar loop, to edit->copy each 1/4 bar to another track and loop it 4 times.
now you have 4 tracks with 'chops' but they are all ready to go at all times and you could play these with the track mutes to 'chop' in realtime.
you can do this on any mpc.
midi rules.

yeah tape deck that is what I meant  we are on the same page of course.
YOu can do it once as a single hit and leave the rest blank as well. This way the pattern becomes a one shot midi pattern that then goes to a pad.

Its not the same though, as I am guessing you can bash around randomly with the Solo track turned on, and still have everything super tight, timing wise. Might be an issue if there is some CC which opens the hihat, and you then mute that track.. the hihat stays open until the next time there is a closing of the hihat played. I've had similiar problems with patterns containing filter movemets. I'll do some experiments and report back, cheers for the suggestions!
