Are those (physical), outs connected to a mixer?

The output your assigning has to be connected to something for you to hear it.

You can still hear the output when you plug headphones directly into the rear panel individual and stereo outputs, through the left side of the headphones only, so he should be able to test it like that.

The individual outs are a lower level than the main stereo out. And even that is significantly lower level than a headphone output. So it might not be audible.
