Track Mute with external controller?

Hi!
I have an MPC 1k with the JJ OS xl installed. Is it possible to control the track mutes with an external midi controller? I would like to use my Alesis Pad Control to control the track mutes while playing the drums, which would be very useful during the gigs. I already have two footswitches for tap tempo and start/stop, which is very cool, but the track mute via midi controller thing would make it perfekt.

use the mpc for the track mutes, select an active track in the track mutes page and use the pad control to play the samples... Same destination sort of.... Or try get a mpd 24... better integrated...

You've got it backwards. Use the MPC1000 for Mutes and the Pad Control to play your beats....

Reviving this ancient thread now that JJ has built this feature into JJOS!

This is a big deal for me as my MPC is the other end of the studio to my other hands-on gear.

Am I right in thinking any MIDI controller will work here? This looks like it could do a job.

I'm basically looking for a 16 pad controller that gives visual feedback for each pad (so I know which tracks are and aren't muted). I also like JJ's application of the F1-6 buttons, so one with 6 buttons would also be handy.

I just started working this way using the MPC 1000 (JJOS2XL) & an old 1st gen Akai LPD8 I had gathering dust for years.
Initial test run had to be done via routing through my studio PC & interface as the LPD is USB midi only, but it works perfectly with minimal fuss to set it up. So now I'm waiting on a small basic USB to midi host box I ordered so I can use it live without the computer.
Obviously if you have any controller with it's own power source & a dedicated midi out, you can connect directly to the MPC midi in.

In case anyone's wondering 'why don't you just do the track mutes on the MPC like everyone else?' - I have a lot of the main bones of every song sequenced, but play a lot of extra little parts live also, & juggling back & forth between the sequence / song & track mute screens really screws up my flow in a live situation, as I will frequently mute the drums or bass & play different sounds live on the pads at the same time.

The setup is very simple, just go to the midi program menu on the MPC, hit the controller pad you'd like to use then change it's value on the MPC menu to 'Track Mute - (*select chosen track number here)' & continue through as many tracks as you require. The 'midi learn' functions, on JJOS at least, seems very straightforward.

This is a big game changer for me personally, as I gig a lot with the MPC. I've been using the multiple audio outs on the 1K going into a 6 channel mixer for several years now, separating keys / samples, drums, bass & extra hits / fx through different audio channels on the MPC & into separate inputs on the mixer. But this new way of working will eliminate the need for the mixer, which will make a big difference for travel / setup convenience going forward.
So basically all I've done is swap the 4 audio outputs for 3 mutable tracks (the 4th is played live so nothing sequenced) & I'll be now using only the main stereo output straight to the venues mixer.

Hope this might help someone going forward, if like me you love the workflow of the 1000 / 2500 but are getting into feeling the need to shell out for one of the current MPC models, there's often little workarounds to get more out of the old models!

Can you mute tracks with the controller without being on the Track Mute screen?

Just received my midi box this morning, works perfectly & I didn't need to tweak any settings at all now I no longer have to route through the DAW to connect the controller. Ready to use for live gigs now, I'm delighted!

Worth a mention also - track mutes didn't work for me in song mode, but that's an easy fix - I just converted all my 'songs' to single sequences, works absolutely fine & solid in regular sequence mode

Sounds good, pal. Never really bothered with song mode but I need to give the 'convert to sequence' option a go.
