my work pre jj and post jj lives in 2 different worlds. pre July 2006 was a subterranean place, where people only communicated clumsily through step edit, where each drum had to be on a separate track for clarity's sake and couldn't be programmed nearly as smoothly.

people will say that features won't make you a better producer but man you've gotta be somewhat honest about it - take 2 calculators, 1 with basic functions and another with advanced graphing techniques, etc.

the new features in this os have made me a better producer most definitely.

before JJ i was doing less thinking about programming and more thinking about how to use the samples and instruments in an innovate way. To an extent I look at it like this:

No matter if youre whack or not, you equipment has improved with JJ, and thats alwys helpful.

if jj os didnt exist,
i wouldve changed to mpc3000 or 4000
but with jj os, i don really wanna change

I tried the 3.X OS when someone confirmed that you could swap back to the old AKAI if the JJ messed anything up, haven't really looked back since.

Ironically I think people have a tendency to complain more the cheaper the product, just have a chat with any of those poor dudes who sell vst's for $20
about emails they get from customers asking them why the **** the vst ain't showing up in Logic.......

Or the dude on this forum a couple of months back who wanted peeps to send him the serial no for free... 500 quid for an mpc & you can't afford 15 pounds??

Still it amazes me that JJ is selling this product for only $30 and I can only think of a couple of reasons why. One is that after all the beta testing (ie us) is over they'll announce partnership with AKAI and up the price tag.
2nd is that they figured that charging more would antagonize AKAI too much and they would be left with a massive law suit.

Or.... they could just be doing it for the good of the mpc user community

Regardless of their reasoning I'm really suprised that AKAI haven't done anything about it. The JJ OS must be violating copyrights & patents left right and center. And with no disregard for Stan, tht man deserves massive props, but creating a manual for the JJ and sticking AKAI's logo on it and he's NOT getting a call from AKAI HQ??

did you read the thread and what jj say about the akai logo? i think there is a quaote of jj!

in the final version there is NO akai logo. there is mpc-forums.com

akai made the mpc a good toy.

jj made the mpc a major tool.

I agree that it seems surprising at first thought, but when you really think about it, AKAI is probably happy that someone was able to make their machine do a lot more, in effect it makes their machine better, thus more sales for them.

They have 2 choices:

1) Try to find and sue someone, which will at best only cause a cease and desist order on the website so that the OS cannot be sold anymore. That would only cost AKAI time and money, they would not be able to recover any money. OR

2) Sit back and watch their sales numbers rise due to expanded capability of the machine and they didn't even have to pay someone to code it.

I can understand why they opted for option 2.


As for JJ. No words I can type here could express my thanks enough. I loved my MPC before the JJ OS, but JJ made it a lot more fun to work on.
