try it out! take a long sample ,cut it down until autochop accept

I'd say it's related to available RAM... when you chop the sample is duplicated in ram, then each chop has to be cretaed and laid out separately. So I'd say that the longest sample you can chop can be roughly 33% of the available RAM. I.e. if you have 100 Mb of free RAM then you can chop a sample of 33 Mb max.

I'm just guessing here though...
