i've used the one kay as the master of pro tools for a couple of days and i have to say it really makes tracking out more reliable and easier.
at the moment i'm working with an mbox2 so i can only track out two seperate channels, usually one track per channel. and being that i didn't like midi clock, the feel felt wrong somehow, the only other option i had was to record and align the tracks which sucked donkeydung after a while since i don't have much time to make beats these days and it's pretty uninspiring to do that shit with a pc that has heating problems so that i have to regularly turn the pc off or else it'll ruin my table, no kidding.
a guy on this forum posted a guide on how to synchronize the 4k as the master of pro-tools, so i read it to find out how to generally set pt up for recieving mtc. it was actually 100% painless.
and it isn't as sloppy as i would've thought aswell, it's pretty tight in fact. i have yet to experience a "jesus, that was offbeat!", a "jesus, that really differed from the original feel i had" or a "jesus, that really differed from the feel earlier in the song"
getting a "turbocharged-enchanced" midi-interface will be the next step for me to try to further improve the tightness of the midi time code.
the only things i did was (i haven't got the program in front of me atm so i don't remember the name of the things 100% or so):
1) go into pad 10 "midi/ synch" and select the mpc to send mtc messages and to send mmc messages.
2) hook a midi cable from the mpc midi out, of course the one which the mtc messages are being transmitted through, to a midi in of my midi interface. in this case the internal interface of a mbox2.
3) go into pro tools, set the same tempo in the pt seq as in the mpc seq.
4) go to "session", then under midi and click midi studio.
5) in midi studio choose the right midi input and select akai from the manufacturer presets and the mpc of choice. they only have the 60, 3000 and 2000 as the options. i just chose the 2000.
6) check that you haven't enabled midi clock under session->midi->midi beat clock
7) activate that clock looking thing in the transport controls.
arm a track for recording, click the record button in the transform menue, press play all on the mpc and the pro tools will use some seconds to synch up to the mpc and then they'll be in synch.
ps. you only need ONE midi cable for this.
if you have a midi interface with two midi ins then you could use one input to recieve the mtc and the other to recieve midi notes so you could use the mpc to sequence your softsynths aswell.
of course that's if pt can recieve both synch and midi messages at the same time, which i believe it can. please correct me if i'm wrong.
and i'm out!
