When this type of recording is used, are the samples saved in a program? or just the names in the sequence? When I open a saved program and sequence with audio tracks, the names appear however the samples are not loaded....is this normal?

the JJ OS doesn't include direct recording, which is actually different than Audio Tracks.

direct recording the Akai way allows you to assign the newly recorded sample to a pad within a program, and then add a note event to trigger that pad to the sequence if you so choose.

JJ Audio tracks record the audio to a file which does not get assigned to a program, and is just referenced in the sequence.

i'm not sure if simply saving programs with sounds and then saving sequences will save the sound files for audio tracks since i don't ever use audio tracks. i'd guess that you might have to save entire memory and load project files to get audio tracks to work properly.

This is based off of my experience with os2 but when you record a sound or performance in using audio tracks they are not applied to a pad, but you can do this because they are saved as a sound.

I've asked JJ if he would improve his audio tracks and answered me it was not planned. Plus he told me there were problems of replay with AKAI direct recording and that's why he made his own stuff.

there are absolutely no problems with replay of akai direct recorded tracks. the samples you record get placed in a program and are treated like regular one-shot samples.

he can keep the audio tracks for all i care, but he should at least implement direct record the akai way. it's a lot more useful, and since the samples get assigned to programs which are then triggered in the sequences as normal pads, they work in song mode, unlike audio tracks.

i totally agree with you mike feedback even i never used 2500 direct recording. It seems now you can start recording the audio tracks at an other location than start so it's a litlle step forward.
I've always been complaining about audio tracks as i was for the random panning bug and i'm waiting for another JJ answer.
I've also asked about the looping possibility but for me the fact that it stopped at the end of the sequence was an improvement coz at the beginning i remember i had to stop it manually and that was a nightmare (pop up screen keep sequence lenght and so on)

has anybody noticed that audio tracks recording are also not very precise ?

i use them to sample my external synth and then chop them.
the recorded wav has always a few hundred empty samples at the beginning, and the total length does not seem to be always the same either...
therefore when i chop in 16 an 8 bar melody it is not very exact.

JJ finally told me they were very busy so if they improve audio tracks it would be after OS2 1.0 release. We have to be patient.

thanks guys. my question was more related towards the saving of these audio tracks and it seems you guys have had the same experience...it would be cool if the Audio tracks can load when the sequence is loaded....otherwise, i'm forced to load them one by one. It would be better if they were assigned to a program also but I'm thinking that might complicate things...
