i'll bet you anything that JJ is currently working for akai & had a hand in the mpc 5000 os.

when i saw the features coming in the 5000, and compared them to what is already in or coming soon in JJ OS 2. plus how close in time they both were released, also considering the amount of lead time required to program the OS (mpc 5000 has pad pattern, and now pad pattern is coming to JJ OS 2 with the interface already created).

i've got no special insider information, just a feeling based on observing what's going on. akai would have sued JJ into oblivion by now if he was working independently, especially with him now implementing some of the 5000 features on the 1000.

looks like an arpegiator to me. i don't think it plays different samples but just plays the sample assigned to the pad at different pitches. so you have a synth sound assigned to pad 1. you hit the pad and it plays the synth sound at different pitches in sync with your master tempo. looks like you can have up to 16 notes play in a row & then have it trigger as a one shot (play thru the pattern once & then stop) or keep looping as long as you hold the pad. you can enter the notes you want each step to play so you can program in your own melodies. looks like each layer can have a different melody.

you could do some really tweaked stuff with drum loops & drum hits but it would be most effective with instrument sounds. synths have had arpegiators for a long time but it is not as common in the sampler world.

eh, the whole question is pretty irrelevant. comparisons to the similarity of the features in the 5000 and 1000 os2 aren't really good evidence - there's nothing new under the sun here, and a convincing similarity has yet to be made, you know? yeah, they both have adsr, but so does nnxt, shortcircuit, etc etc.

also, haha you know it's shaky to compare pad pattern (which we haven't experienced yet) to the 5000 (which we also haven't experienced yet!)

i've got several good reasons to believe he's (no longer) working for akai circa 2004 BUT if he is, it makes no difference to us and actually gives a +1 for akai. which they need, so bad.

i think the main purpose for this would be live performance and for those people, this is really sick...

helll id take my mpc and fantom out live if i knew i could just throw out some patterns and not have to bang live. im kind of a studio guy but could def cheat a bit live if i just had to play the keys and trigger some patterns

I hope this is what we're speculating. I just sent a request to JJ to implement the pad pattern feature of the new 5000 model if he could.
