its been a while since i played with the 1000 standalone, and i've got to say im blown away by the progress of the jj os 1 v4.99! i can remember not even being able to record track mutes- now it seems like, in addition to the dual q-link controls, you can also automate the filters, level, pan etc. for each individual pad in any given program.

but im still trying to wrap my head around how/where each parameter can be automated, and how the sliders function in each situation. for example, if i set the qlinks to level and cutoff, respectively, and record the movements from the main screen, it automatically overwrites whatever is on the track for those parameters. but if i go into grid edit> q real, it seems to function almost like a touch/latch fader, meaning that it only overwrites the info already on the track while im moving it. is this correct? and how does the "after" button fit into all this?

also, if i record level adjustments in the mixer page, how does that interact with the level adjustments recorded by a qslider assigned to level? do they cancel out, add/subtract, or does one override the other? or if record tune movements for individual pads in the grid edit > q real page, how do they react to movements made with a slider assigned to the tune of an entire track?

finally, is there anyway to look at only my slider events in the seq edit page? it seems like i can only look at them under the "all events" screen.

basically, if someone could post a rundown of every parameter that can be recorded, what page it can be recorded in, etc. that would be great. nym, im looking at you, haha.

hahaha you bastard
i was reading this thread thinking "hohoo boy, i don't wanna tackle this one"
i'm using os2 now, which uses different specification, but here's what i can tell you:

the AFTER buttons are "preview only" kinda things. when you hit AFTER, it shouldn't matter if you have qlink data you already recorded - ie, if you have TUNE selected as qlink and recorded a bunch of wacky tune sweeps, if you have AFTER on, the sound will only play from where your qlink currently is positioned. give it a shot, you'll see for yourself way easier than this awkward explanation.

grid edit qreal and "outside" qreal do in fact behave differently. i am much more experienced and familiar with the "outside" qreal grid editing aspect, because in os2 qreal grid editing is strange (and i have a feeling it's going to change shortly). i record outside qreal edit because of the ability to set HI and LOW in the qlink screen - this is very powerful. after recording it, though, i edit it in qreal mode.

qreal data will overdub itself depending on where the data lands. you can get some grainy weirdness this way.

as i remember, level adjustment in the mixer page = qreal level.
i BELIEVE tune movements for individual pads in grid edit = PRE track tune qreal.

finally, is there anyway to look at only my slider events in the seq edit page? it seems like i can only look at them under the "all events" screen.

you mean step edit, right? just scroll through the "VIEW" option and you'll see pitch bend, ch pressure, cc, and eventually realtime options.

i knew if i put your name in it there'd be no way you could let it go, haha.

so, wait, lemme ask this since im not near my 1000 right now- say you record movements for parameters assigned in the slider mode page, (say tune) if you then change those parameters to something else (say level), will the sequence retain the tune automation, so you could theoretically overdub the level afterwards? maybe this is kind of a bonehead question, but even though i can only assign the q-link slider to two parameters (with two targets, either an individual pad or the entire track) at a time, can i record automation and then reassign them to other parameters and targets? has this been a feature all along and i didnt realize it, haha?

because this is what it seems like im able to do when im in the grid edit > qreal page, but i didnt know if recording the automation with the "outside" qlink is actually the same as going into the grid edit page, selecting the parameter and individual pads, and automating them in there. also, the parameters would need to react to each other appropriately, so i could, say, automate tune of individual bass notes on individual pads to create a sliding, rolling bassline, and then pitch shift the entire track up or down to simulate chord changes or turntable speed.

i also REALLY like that you can auto mate the start and end time of samples now. that's insane for drum breaks. i've had the 1000 since 2004 and it's really the only piece of gear i've ever owned that just keeps getting better and continues to surprise me.

yes, you can "stack" recorded qlink realtime data. ie, on a bassline, control filter and also tune. you CANNOT stack NOTE ON qlink data. you've been able to do that since 2.01 (minus the "TRACK" option, which made it 90% less useful)

use tap tempo to turn TC 32/3 on, hold down a pad with your drum break on it, hit after, and modulate its start point in realtime with the qlink...

what is the note on q link data? i thought it was all realtime?

edit- ok i figured out which parameters are note on only... but what does it mean that you can't stack them? does that mean i can only record one note on parameter's automation per track? or per pad? or per program? can i stack as many real time layers as i want, and then only one note on parameter?

look in STEP EDIT.

record a note.
it displays the time, the note, the qlink note on data, the duration, and the velocity.
each note has exactly 1 qlink note on value.
ie, you can't set the qnoteon sample START to like 40 and the qnoteon attack to 3 in a single note instance.

the difference between qreal and qnoteon is that qreal is it's own note.
qnoteon is PART of a recorded midi note, like duration and velocity.

it's my ultimate dream that EVERYTHING on the MPC be recordable in the sequence, like effect parameter changes and especially PROGRAM parameter changes (change LFO rates, change filter types & values, etc.)

if JJ could accomplish this it would be mindblowing.

i would get way more use out of that than pattern mode, or instrument programs. but thats just my workflow. i rarely need more than three or four pads for a melody.
