your mpc needs os1 to install os2, because os2 is physically installed in a different part of the mpc1000's memory.
you need to buy both in order to run os2. os2 and the forthcoming os2xl are basically the same ie occupy the same space in your mpc's memory - xl just offers a wider feature set.
imagine that the total cost of os2xl = 115 dollars (edit: USD, sorry), total. because of technological restrictions, you need to buy the os's piece by piece, rather than an all in one deal - this is because of the installation process, not because they're somehow trying to con you into buying more than you need to.

december 22 for the 1000. hopefully soon after for the 2500.
they keep the 2500 in the loop pretty quick
this puts you at a somewhat disadvantaged situation because not much is gonna be compatible with 2xl.
many of your programs will (depending on what you use) and seq data will (mostly) but keep in mind that some things will be different.
what's good is that as you learn os2, you're also learning 2xl - i've found them to be real similar in workflow. so if you geta bunch of ideas down in os2 in the meantime, they will be real real easy to recreate in 2xl quickly.

let me get this right. OS 2 is not completely compatible with 2xl but I can't go from OS 1 to 2xl? I have a 1k with os 1 but I'm holding off to upgrade my 2500 which will be here some time this week, it's obviously shipping with the Akai OS. What would be the best way to work this out? I 'm still gonna have to get all three, but I don't want to start mad projects that are not not gonna be compatible. Wish I could go from one to xl. Also when I format my hard drive for the 2500 what OS do you recommend I do it in?

format the drive with whatever os you are going to use permenantly. also you can go from 1-xl but the cost is still the same. 115 out the door. im really biting my lip here to keep on topic and off of the cost..............
