Cool Automated Mute Trick (and Question)

Aright-- So in the Track Mute screen, I have some long decaying synth chords programmed in Track 3 of the sequence. I hit overdub, and rapidly tap Pad 3 in time with the beat. Striking and unusual gating type of effect, sounds great when I got it right and looped it. Try this, if you never have. Make sure the mute type is set to volume, or whatever (OS2XL)

Now the question... Is there a way to mute a track BUT ONLY WHILE HOLDING a pad? (So that the track is unmuted when I release the pad.) I thought maybe by using mute groups, but I don't think I can get the same effect that way... the sound won't instantly retrigger itself when unmuted.

Anyone follow all of this? I've always wanted a way to do this fast precise mute while pressing a pad... hopefully someone knows a way (so I don't have to run to JJ like a spoiled brat).

not as sharp a cutoff, but you could do the same thing with filter cutoff, no resonance, and aftertouch

Not exactly a trance gate, Biatch... nothing automated about this chopiness. The main thing I dig is that the sequence plays back the fast mutes pretty much EXACTLY how you record them.

I achieved something similar a while back by using SAMPLE START (one of my favorite ccs, hands down). While recording, I just tapped the pad in time while gradually increasing the sample start time, which basically just increases the sense of attack. It sounds like you want to do the opposite, i.e. decrease the attack while muting, so just have the sample start set to wide open and then ride the fader to decrease the start time while hitting the pad in time. Easy.

Start time w/ Qlink is definitely great... problem is, these are long samples which I don't want to keep restarting from the beginning.

could you do something like aftertouch or velocity controlling layers?

you would have your main sample on layer one and a sample of silence on layer 2.

depending on how hard you struck / pressed the pad it would switch between layers and play either the sample or the silence.


don't know if this would work as i never tried it, but might be worth looking into.

yeah man! used to do this waaay waaay back by sending a duplicate track of whatever i wanted to use as my rhythm 'carrier' , from an indiv out from the mpc, to the key input on a noise gate, and pass whatever track i wanted "transformed" thru the gate.. used to do it cause it sounded like crossfader action on a dj mixer ..but hey e's are cheap these days.. those harlem dudes wearin fluffy pink and rappin bout e's a few years ago set the stage ... what's next? i guess now i'm waitin for the heroin-addicted grunge rappers or a wave of gay mc's from the boiler district..

I predicted the emergence of "homo hop" back in 2000 or 2001. I'm sure there were plenty of gay rappers back then, but it struck me as uncharted territory at the time. I guess that scene will probably always be somewhat underground.....
