hi guys.

using mpc with JJOS, trying to sequence drums and breaks from cubase, for some reason i can't set it up with different patches on diff midi channels - the patch changes when i move from track to track in the mpc....

is it possible to have 16/32 diff channels/patches sequenced from the pc? i'm struggling to get more than one channel playing at a time. :(

yeah.

got an mpc1000, emu esi32 and a e5000.

might have to get a s5000 or s6000 too.

this stuff was only for proper studios or rich kids when it first came out.

i've been using the mpc to make some hip hop bits all in the mpc, but wanted to use it with my pc + emu - make dnb, emu for bass and mpc for drums.

still very possible, just sequence at least the drums on the mpc on one track.

This issue is a major gripe for me. It's just about the most basic you can get as far as midi capability goes, and IMO you can't call any machine a true sampler if it doesn't have at least this.

That being said, i've now been using my jjos2 1k intensively for about 3 months now, and now i've learnt my way around and found a good way to integrate it into the rest of my setup i'm finding it a more creative tool than I expected. The layout of the controls is mostly pretty intuitive to me, and the switch from final midi-sequencing in Cubase to using the MPC's Song mode brings a certain level of new creative freedom with it, and in my case streamlines my workflow and lets me get things done faster.

So i'm with Nym; build at least a part in the MPC. I also use other equipment, but for final sequencing i'm now mostly controlling it from the MPC.

is not a 'true sampler' a machine that samples?

mpc is a 'sampling sequencer'. its name says its a 'midi production center' or indeed 'music production center'... it was meant to be the 'center' of a studio setup, not its parts.

i look at the mpc like its really the wok that all the ingredients are thrown into, and not the actual ingredients themselves.

the mpc 1000 is totally worth the money for what it does. if you want more of one thing, and less of the other, there are other models. if you want a sampler, there are those. just allow the 1000 to do what it was meant to do and you wont be upset with it.

seems that the history of mpc development has always been weird
multitimbrality had unfortunately never been considered by the developers of the 1000/2500 in creation...

if i didn't use the mpc as my lead sequencer, i wouldn't have it in my equipment list at all.

..yes and no. Yes because (duh) it samples, no because to me a sampler is also a machine that lets you use the recorded samples in a musical way, which in my case involves (or at least used to involve) interacting with the rest of my equipment via midi.

I'm pretty pleased with my 1k by now, and I blame any initial dissapointment on myself for naively expecting to be able to keep my old way of working while switching to a new sequencer.

the mpc is a midi sequencer first. and a sampler second. always been that way. thats why it was originally called a "midi production center" and not a "music production center". just because someone developed a better slice system or editing features for the sampler side. doesnt take away from what the core operation of the system is. midi sequencing. and it does this better than any other machine in production today. hell the 60-1 does it better than any other machine made. and the newer units have just improved on this. if you want a sampler with multi-tim then pick up a s-series rack sampler. no matter what model mpc i have its always the main controller in my setup. if you want to pump up your setup with cubase then leave the mpc in control and load up a bunch of vst's into cubase and basque in the hotness!!!!

i have just noticed that my old 2000xl had 'multiple track recording' for midi, and neither the 2500 nor JJos now have this. thats pretty lame, and it seems to be tied into the issue with only having the active track recieving at any time. can't believe akai would drop something like this
