I'm not sure but I think this might be a bug as I've noticed the following:

After highlighting the PC (program change) field in version 4.21, I've noticed the values will not increment in multiples of 10 when I hold down the shift key and rotate the data wheel like they did in 4.15. This also happens in the bank select window in the "P. Change" field as well. Has anyone else noticed this? Should it be reported to JJ as a bug?

The use of the shift key would further minimize extra wear on our data wheels. I think this should be considered a bug as this functionality was in the previous version (4.15) of the new OS but not included in 4.21.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: I've revised the title of this thread as I've discovered this problem still exists in 4.22 as well.

Also in addition to the shift + data wheel problem, I've also noticed another problem in 4.22 only. When entering a value directly using the "numeric" function and pressing enter, the "PC" field value always goes to "seq". I have to move the data wheel forward one then back one in order for the value I just entered to display. I would definitely consider this a bug as well. After entering a numeric value directly and pressing enter, the newly entered value should be immediately displayed in the program change field.

im new to the program change function, but when i tried it this morning with my korg em-1, it didnt change the patches, it changed the patterns. example:

korg: synth 1 is midi channel 1 and synth 2 is midi channel 2.

i changed the midi channel on the mpc to channel 1b. when i hit the pad i can hear the note and i can see the midi light on the korg flash. when i go to pc and change it, it jumps to the next pattern. meaning that when i fire up the korg, it opens up at pattern a01, when i change the program change function to 2 it goes to pattern a02.

is this a bug? or a user error. i had to go to work so i didnt have much time to experiment, but if its a bug i would like to report it.

thanks for any answers...

I'm not familiar with the em-1. However, you might want to check the synth's documentation concerning its midi implementation before reporting that as a bug. Some synths use program change messages for other things besides changing patches depending on their setting. For example, my Motif rack uses program changes to change multis when the MSB or LSB (one or the other, I don't remember which) is set to 65, but when it's set to some other value, it changes patches. Your em-1 could be setup to change patterns with program change messages instead of patches. Check the em-1 documentation to find out the proper MSB/LSB values for changing patches with program change. I have to do that with every synth I buy if I can't figure it out myself.

I still think the shift key + data wheel operation should still implement the PC values by 10 though. I believe JJ intended that functionality but left it out for some reason or maybe forgot to add it in when modifiying the mainscreen and bankselect window.

hey thanks for that bit of info. that actually makes a lot of sense. im at work, but i will look that up when i get home. im new at hardware, but im finding it to be pretty fun, and inspirational. thanks again...

I tried it on mine and it works fine. I use a Fantom X6 and the MSB has to be set at 87. I agree with moorekv, check your documentation on Midi for your keyboard. Mine works the same way it did before.

No problem. Glad to be of help.

ahh this thing sucks, the midi implementation chart says

control change 0,32 bank select (msb, lsb)

and the book says that it has to go through pattern mode, which is stupid because if a the synth parts have their own spots on the unit, i would think that i could simply scroll through the different sounds. but then again ive looked for a total of 15 distracted minutes. i guess if it doesnt work its not the end of the world. i didnt even know what it was this morning!!! :)

There are no patches as such on the KORG Electribes. Sounds are saved as a part of the patterns. There's no separate memory for sounds, and yes, Program Changes change patterns, not sounds...

alright. thanks for saving me from beating a dead horse

Actually, they change both on the EM1. If you only want to change sounds, use the MPC to do the sequencing and turn off external sync on the EM1.

im at work so i cant try, but would that change only the sound? i think thats what you said, but i need to double tap just in case :)
thanks for the tip btw.

it doesnt look like i can turn off the clock. i get the internal and the external and either one changes the pattern. i have my lsb set to 32 on the mp per the electribe manual, but theres no change. any other suggestions?

What clock are you trying to turn off? The internal MIDI clock? That's only used for synchronization. You wouldn't need the clock for changing patches. If you want to turn off the MPC's sync clock, you should be able to turn it off by going to the MIDI/SYNC mode and selecting "OFF" for both receiving and transmitting sync.

As far as why your patches won't change on your em-1, I'd have to have the machine and read the manual myself to answer that. Sorry I can't be of much help there.

Can someone else confirm they have the same problem as I do---with the shift + data wheel function not working in the program change field as well as the value entry via the "numeric" function cause the program change value to go to "seq"?

I've just reported these bugs to JJ.

First, changing patterns on the EM1 will always change both sounds and pattern. That's the way it works, no way to change that. The point of disabling clock receive on the EM1 and/or clock send on the MPC is to stop the EM1 pattern seq from running when you start the MPC seq -- so it doesn't matter what the EM1 pattern is cuz you never hear it unless you press PLAY on the EM1. That way, you should only hear a change in the sounds when you change the program. If you want to hear a particular EM1 pattern with different EM1 sounds, you'll have to record it into the MPC with sync first then turn the sync off, play back on MPC and switch the EM1 programs.

Second, you are misreading that EM1 MIDI implementation chart, and you need to brush up on your MIDI controllers. Check these out:

http://www.voidaudio.net/controller.html

http://www.tweakheadz.com/midi_controllers.htm

The number "32" isn't where you set the BANK SELECT LSB, it is the BANK SELECT LSB. Look at the chart in the first link. The EM1 only responds to LSB 0 and 1 because it only has two program banks -- any other number is ignored.

OK sorry about the off-topic tangent there, I'd try to confirm these 4.22 errors but I haven't gone past 4.15 yet, the latest stuff sounds pretty buggy...
