Forum to discuss all matters relating to the MPC1000 and MPC2500 operating systems created by 'JJ' (all versions).

Hi all,

I've read the manuals and browsed the forums, but couldn't find out how to control track volume on the MPC. Not velocity (I know that in general, velocity != volume), but volume as in "MIDI CC #7". Is it possible at all? Do I need to upgrade to OS2 for the "track mixer" function? (there isn't much explanation of what exactly it does).

thanks in advance,
Boris.

you can assign a slider to realtime message7(volume) or any other CC#

you bring up an interesting issue.

CC 7 = device volume in the general midi layout of CCs. i use this constantly in my sequencer for external midi stuff.

unfortuantley, CC 7 does not correspond to VOLUME relating to PGMS, inst or drum.

there has been mention of hopes of establishing CC values according to track functions, ie CC 7 = track volume, CC 73 = resonance, CC 74 = filter cutoff.

"qlinks" are great, but i wish they would be overlapped by the more how do you say "global" concept of midi ccs

good post

This was one of my first big dissapointments when I got my mp1k several years ago too (pre JJ).

Seems to me, that because the it's not multi-timbral it would be hard to implement.

I have no idea if the it's possible to implement, but essentially JJ would have to change the architecture of the OS so that you could assign an incoming midi channel to a track or program.

Seems like a long shot, but it would be fluggin awesome if he did add some sort of multi timbral functionality to the sound generator (internal sampler) OS 2! Even if it's just for volume. But if they set it so filter/res/pan/lfo/pitch was controllable too, i'd pay even more for that. :)

Are you serious? This is supposed to be the best sequencer and it has no volume/pan controls for each track?

What do you do?

Is every one of your tracks center positioned at the same volume?

The mpc1000 w/ JJ OS2 seems to have everything I need to record my synth/guitars/bass to, but this news of no mixer is ridiculous. If thats true I'll have to look for something different I guess.

I've never heard of anyone using a sequencer or recording device that didn't have volume/pan controls for each track and making good music. Something must be inaccurate here.

Can someone clear this up please?

jk 81 - haha don't get your feathers in a ruffle. it does have a mixer (two of them), and it does have volume/pan control for each track. just not controlled by midi cc. there are at least 3 ways of controlling volume: at the sample level, at the pad level, and at the track/pgm level.

to mr.nym!!
you seem to be the guy to ask.. is there a way to make programchanges besides from step edit? like in groove edit?? or from pads?? so sorry to ripped the topic.. but hey..im i a anarchist :D

hahah of all the times to not know the answer.
program changes aren't actually a part of my current arsenal, so i'm not the guy to ask for that.
however, i do know that there are some software midi fx that allow you to translate midi CCs to program changes. which i imagine could come in handy.

Thanks nym,

I'll keep my feathers together, lol. Are these features available on the new JJ os only or all of them?

Thanks

in the main screen the "PC" field is for that purpose...
it will send the pc when you change your sequence (next seq to...)

yepp! i figured that out! but if you like to change program(sound) with in the same track while the sequenser is running.. i meen not just once(at the start of the sequenser) but.. like in step edit, change sounds at diffrent possitions..??

you'll have to use the step edit mode

Thanks Peter, this seems like what I need. I just thought there's a special mode where the sliders control track pan and volume (without the need to explicitly assign them).

You mean, MPC's internal sound generator does not react to CC7? That's a real bummer!

there are at least 3 ways of controlling volume: at the sample level, at the pad level, and at the track/pgm level

So, how to do it at the track level?
See, I come from background of E-Mu Command Stations - they have a "mixer" mode where 16 knobs control the volume of 16 tracks. This works both on internal sounds and external MIDI devices, and it's really convenient.

@melton - why do you say it's not multitimbral? It can play different sounds (programs) on different MIDI tracks, so by definition it's multitimbral.

boreg,
I'm no midi dictionary, but you cannot simultaneously control multiple tracks (of the internal sound generator/sampler) of the mp1k via multiple external midi channels, which I believe is somewhere in the ball park of the definition of a multi-timbral device.

Yes, the mp1k can control 32 unique midi channels of out-board gear, but the internal sound generator, can only be controlled one track at a time, therefore it isn't multi-timbral.

hope that made sense.
