PPQN in JJ OS 1000

Can the JJ OS increase the resolution from the lowly 96 ppqn to anything better? Its really bad for live recordings.

I've read that the 2500 JJ OS increased the ppqn to 960 or something high like that. Do you know if they did it to the 1000 as well?

192 is far better than 96
just double your tempo and use that resolution. if you want to get even more specific, work with offsetting your sample in TRIM.

that = resolution of 1/44100.

Nym, I read it posted on another forum. Thats why I'm looking for someone else's opinion to verify. 192 is pretty good and useable, thats what my TR61 had. Once I got used to recording as audio, it left me wondering how much better recordings would sound without any resolution when using a sequencer.

I'm just going to use the audio tracks from JJ os to record my instrumentation on, now that I know they have them. Then use the midi tracks for drums and samples.

that will definitely be nice. i just bought a banjo, and when i get good enough that's what i'll do for sure.

are you using a daw?
you could do more extensive audio track editing on that, ie comping guitar takes etc, and then bounce it back to the mpc for a more refined loop

I can't really use a DAW because my computer sucks. I have ableton 6 lite that I can use for sample editing, but because of my low ram and latency its not useable for recording anything external. I do plan to utilize it for sample editing though w/ the usb.

Anyway, I just won a mpc1000 w/ full ram and jjos 4.9 for $550 including shipping. I'm pretty excited, despite the vulgar email I just received from the guy I outbid at the last second, lol. The lack of computer useage is why I need the mpc. I plan to do everything in it, except vocals.

What do you mean about the spdif? My plan is to resample my complete songs as a new wav sample then export the file to my pc through USB. Does that affect sound quality at all?

Also, I got the blue/red version, is there any difference from the black one in sound/timing/anything thats important?

no difference from black as far as basic hardware goes, excluding the pads (often)
you probably got one with old pads. that's a whole nother story.

regarding spdif, resampling internally is the same thing, essentially a digital copy. lossless audio.

you should post up the vulgar email so i can get a laugh out of it...and you should be pretty well content with using the mpc1000 for everything, though you're gonna want to upgrade to jjos2 so you can use inst pgms unless you're all about only sample chopped stuff. for $550, that's a steal. congrats.

someday, you may want to build a pc daw. it augments the power of the mpc in a hundred ways. but that's in the future, you gotta get good with the sampler first.

I'm planning to upgrade to OS2. I read on jj website something about you need the 4.9 ver. password to install the OS2? Is that true? I'll have to see if the seller still has it.

As for the pads, I have heard bad things about them, but I plan on using my keyboard to play samples and everything from anyways. I got an alesis qs8 with hammer action, fully weighted keys and the spring back on the keys from the hammer action gives everything a nice bouncy feel, especially drums, when playing in real time. I tried the pads on a new black 1000 once and my finger tips were hurting for days after, lol. Maybe these will be more broken in and softer. We'll see.

I really hope JJ will increase the PPQN. I don't like to double the tempo. That is really not handy because you don't allways know if you are going to record some fast playing notes. If you have some sounds already sequenced on for example 125BPM and then decide to play some fast notes on you midi keyboard, you would have to double the tempo to record them smoothly, but then then rest of your song need to be adjusted as well.

And I also have my old vintage external drum machines synced. I don't like to adjust the scale on them.

using double time resolution isn't something you do mid song.
it's a starting point, a default setting.

Well that would be really a pity. The MPC could become such a good midi sequencer with a higher PPQN.

i'd say the mpc1000 is already a good midi sequencer - it's way more focused and speedy to work with/edit than any software sequencer i've used.

960 would be nice, but 192 is adequate, even for drums where every tick counts twice as much. beats at the mpc1000 level are early - the mpc1000's a compositional tool, for getting the ideas out. refinements can be made in DAW, for instance

if you record your midi tracks into a daw afterwards, you can scale up your ppq in DAW by adding a slight timing humanizer set to operate within the range of +/-10 (out of 960).
